ONTARIO'S PROVINCIAL FLOWER-- Photo for all, but especially for PD

Blog Posted:4/10/2013 11:22:00 AM

Ontario's provincial flower, the Trillium, grows in woodlands.

It is currently Illegal to pick a trillium in Ontario.

They are a protected species.

Should you pick one, it will cost you $500 in fines.

How's that for a pricey wildflower?

:P

Loved your blog PD! Gorgeous flowers!

I bet that because they put that fine on it, it is getting picked more than ever, Cyndi. That's how the French got their people to enjoy potatoes. The king had them planted around the palace and put soldiers guarding them during the day, and this inspired the French to sneak into the fields at night and grab those potatoes!!

Hey Chris, I thought it was a myth, too. But today I poked around. Did you know there was an ammendment? "Bill 184 2009 An Act to amend the Floral Emblem Act Note: This Act amends the Floral Emblem Act, which has not previously been amended. Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows: 1. The Floral Emblem Act is amended by adding the following section: Prohibition 2. (1) No person shall pick, cut down, dig, pull up, injure or destroy, in whole or in part, whether in blossom or not, the plant that produces the trillium grandiflorum or white trillium. Non-application of subs. (1) (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to any person engaged in, (a) the lawful carrying out of any public work or of the person’s occupation; or (b) the carrying out of necessary work on property owned or lawfully occupied by the person. Offence and penalty (3) Any person who contravenes subsection (1) is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not less than $500. Commencement 2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent. Short title 3. The short title of this Act is the Ontario Trillium Protection Act, 2009. ______________ EXPLANATORY NOTE The Bill amends the Floral Emblem Act to prohibit, with limited exceptions, injuring or destroying in any way the plant that produces the trillium grandiflorum, Ontario’s floral emblem, popularly known as the white trillium. It creates an offence for doing so punishable by a fine of not less than $500.

It is GOOD that there is at least an attempt being made at conserving nature. But I guess it just gets my panties in a twist that they take this seriously and yet farmland is disappearing (there is a local battle in this matter, right now) Save the flower but raze the trees? I can't help but think, MORE and not so ... hmm... narrowly focused? I am glad you shared this info! No guff! :)

Cyndi, if I am wrong, I have no problem standing corrected. This is how it has been explained to me: if one carefully picks a trillium grandiflorum flower(even though the 2009 amendments clearly state: "or in part")from the stem without damaging the plant, charges won't be laid. The problem with all 49 Canadian trillium species is that when the plant becomes injured, it is such a finicky plant that it takes a very long time to heal, or it simply keels over. Simply picking a flower, no matter how carefully, technically constitutes an "injury", but if one is caught gently picking a white trillium flower from the stem, on public non-provincial park property, charges won't be laid by MoE....but really, why pick a trillium? If one picks them around kids, then the kids mimic, and then their friends mimic them and so forth.

PS-- I like that you know! We should all know about conservation. PPS-- yesterday I had a near melt down at "coffee culture" I look up & see a news flash that N Korea is going to launch a missile and everyone is sipping their fricking lattes like it was news about a celebrity break up. I had this, aren't you people getting this moment? Odd world when biscotti means more than nuclear arms.

Well, I almost feel obligated to be the Ca-nerd Canuck on this blog. Ontario's Provincial flower is indeed a trillium, but the trillium family is quite large; trilliums come in a lot of different colours, sizes and shapes. The trillium referred to in this blog, is the common: Trillium grandiflorum. There is a widely misconstrued belief that the grandiflorum(white trillium)is illegal to pick -- it is only illegal to pick in the two areas it is protected in: most provincial parks and areas designated by conservational projects. If one is caught picking a grandiflorum in such an area, it would be a Park Warden or Ranger laying charges via jurisdiction upheld by the MoE(Ministry of Environment). Depending on the evidence and extent of the infraction, charges can range from around $400 to upwards of $2400. Anywhere else in Ontario, it isn't technically illegal to pick the Trillium grandiflorum, but it is frowned upon, hence the spreading of the urban myths surrounding the supposed illegalities of picking this flower. There is a very protected species of Ontario trillium on the endangered flora list, which is illegal to pick anywhere. It is the: Trillium flexipes(drooping trillium). This flower is becoming more rare all the time. Btw, this comment has been written using my own words(*snicker* -- told ya I was going to be a Ca-nerd Canuck on this blog). If someone has other questions regarding laws concerning the flora and fauna of Ontario or British Columbia, I have extensive knowledge regarding such laws. And not because I am poacher -- I am a conservationalist at heart.

Small world! I was in Waterloo for Easter to visit my grandparents. My grandpa was an English prof at U of W. I think I inherited my love of literature from him! I will definitely check out Elizabeth's poetry. Thanks for the suggestion, fellow Canuck :)

PS- Have you read any of Elizabeth's poems? She is another Ontarian! And one of the best poets on the site. I think you'd love her work. Oops I mean Elizabeth Wesley. Brilliant stuff. Deep and lovely.

Yes, it is. I'm a former Montrealer (a lifetime ago I moved to Ontario.) I'm moving soon to the tiny town of New Hamburg. It will be a culture shock. I'm used to 24/7. It's more like... 12/6. LOL! I'm currently in Waterloo!

Not joshing ya about the fine. Of course, I do not know who will hand out the fine. It's not like the mounties are roaming Queen's land here in Canada waiting to nab the next trillium-killer! Sounds like a Saturday night live routine, eh? Chris you out there? Heather? Francine? Mystic Rose? Hey Canucks! xox
