Yes, Becca, I must agree with your stand on coming to the defense of a friend, (blog or otherwise), when witnessing a hurtful slanderous remark. I myself, have done just that. The fine line, I suppose, is to keep cool, and not stir up more anger between soupers. That isn't always easy to do. We all need to carefully choose our words. And we are all very likely to be misunderstood, sometimes it's better to bite our tongue or count to ten.

Hi again Cyndi...I guess it's that I regard disagreeing as something different than a squabble, (isn't it??)....I had meant in my orginal comment that spats/squabbles might be better solved via soupmail. For instance, if someone thinks an unkindness has been targeted at them, or their friend,...I would suggest writing a soupmail to that person rather than blogging it. That's the kind of thing I was speaking of. I didn't mean we couldn't have our own opinions expressed in a blog forum, as respectfully as possible, of course. I think having our own opinions is necessary, even if they are different than someone else's ...I would consider that a discussion, not an argument. But thanks for listening.

@Carrie & Carolyn. :-D Thank you for stopping by, reading the blog AND (here's the irony) DISAGREEING with me on a blog in a respectful and considerate manner. LOL. That's what I'm talking about. Neither of you soup mailed me to say, "No. I don't share your view." You both felt free to share your opinions and did so with courtesy and decorum. It is possible to be yourself, state your position clearly and not cause a fistacuff. What I say out public is basically what I say in private. To me, it is a part of integrity. Again, thanks for coming.

cont.... Which tends me to agree with TPS view.......to keep our squabbles/spats/arguments within a private soupmail....Respect the rights of other poets to have more harmony. Just an opinion... But once again, the word respect...is the most powerful part of disagreeing.

To be honest here, Cyndi, I think any squabbling may be okay if it's strictly between two poets via soupmail. Then they can work out their differences. But to use the blog forum for their differences, creates an atomosphere of other people taking sides, ...taking everything out of context, blowing it up to be bigger than it needed it to be. I am not overly sensitive, or get my feelings hurt easily...but I do get impatient when I see squabbles turning ugly...which they do much too often. This is partly do to the fact that not everyone can keep their tempers or see the logical side of a "mild" disagreement.and have to get in the middle, creating a fracus. cont...

@ Ruben. One of the greatest problems in communicating it is very difficult to share one's views and then the intention/motivation behind one's opinions. Take for example, I read a note from someone. It was MEANT as a nice comment. I KNEW it was meant as a nice comment. The person making it is nice, MORE than nice. The person said, and I quote, "You are furniture here." Now, there are many ways to take that. I know the INTENT because I've come to know the person. Have you ever seen the cult classic with Charlton Heston, something Green, hmm, Soylent Green. Anyways, in the film, prostitutes are called furniture. A girl (furniture) comes with condos in the future, a soft place to lie, a cosy place to unwind. Furniture is inanimate, lacks emotion and is something we use. And yet, I know that my other interpretion is my own -- via seeing this movie and my own impressions. I also know that the souper who was calling another souper "furniture" would be distraught at hearing my other analogy. I kept my knowledge of the movie, the ideology to myself. Why hurt someone who was trying to be kind and yet may have lost part of his message in the translation? Hugs, thanks hon, Cyndi Oh, if you don't know the movie...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soylent_Green

---->In order to avoid most problems we NEED to understand and we NEED to be understood (never rushing to judgment...or jumping to easy conclusions). .... "It is not the language but the speaker that we want to understand." (Hindu Upanishads).

I have seen Soupers grow apart...become estranged because of misunderstanding... actually: miscommunication. "Communicating" IS talking (writing) ...and listening (reading)! The way we view the world and interpret events is always different. If we want to share opinions and feelings (communication) we should be aware of it. However... we are all BOTH "different" and "the same." Because of our different backgrounds (culture, nacionalities, education) and our different issues (biases, preconceptions, arrogance, narrow-mindedness, stereotyping) we have different points of view. Yet, we are the same in that we have a need to be understood and appreciated.

The problem is that many people cannot disagree without getting hurt or over emotional. Then, they make the mistake of making it public and by then its out of control. People more and more these days lack self control.
