About CYNDI MACMILLAN
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo Writing a biography irks me. How much to reveal? What tidbits to conceal?

The Basics: I’m a 45 year-old, stay-at-home mom of an adorable two year old girl. I’m happily married to a wonderful man who is my living contradiction, the quiet to my loud, the calm to my frantic. Life continually amuses, bemuses and confuses me.

My first poem, which I wrote at five, was entitled, “Lov is Magik” and my father kept the fading, folded paper I scribbled it upon in his wallet for decades. I have tinkered in poetry ever since, but my main passion is fiction. My short stories have been published in the local papers. Occasionally, I dabble with creative non-fiction. I have a several chapters of a book completed which I’m hoping to submit to Avalon Books.

Despite years of living in Ontario, I will always consider myself foremost a Montrealer. Now living in Waterloo County, home of Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, I am content in our downsized apartment which is close to uptown, but overlooks Laurel Creek.  Though considered Canada’s Silicon Valley, the city is surrounded by a picturesque countryside filled with Mennonites. It is not uncommon to see a Mercedes Benz carefully pass a horse drawn wagon. Even our local hardware stores provide parking for buggies. We have many wonderful festivals, two universities, and culture galore.

I spent years as an E.C.E. teacher and adore children. Now, that I have one of my own –after 16 heartbreaking years of infertility – my days are filled with finger paints and drinking imaginary tea from tiny pink tea cups. Sleep is a distant memory and writing is my night time balm. My hubby works evening shifts. After my girl is asleep, my imagination runs wild and I write.

I am a Jill of all trades. I've worked as a personal care attendant in a home for young people with physical and developmental challenges. Had a short go as a dishwasher in my younger days, oh joy.  I've also been an engraver, a store manager, a cashier at the Sally Anne, but my last job was as at an office where I worked on databases (I WISH I was a geek.)

As a newer member of Poetry Soup, I am often dazzled by its diversity, the quiet, shy voices, the bellows in the foreground, the cackles in the corners. There is so much talent here! I love the contests run by its members as I enjoy a challenge.

Nice to meet you!  Looking forward to growing together, as writers and friends.

Hugs, Cyndi

IS THIS WRONG? RUDE? I JUST PUT THIS NOTE ON SOMEONE'S POEM. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Blog Posted:1/9/2013 7:22:00 AM

"I thought I would also mention something which I would have wanted told to me, as a newer member on a writing site... we only have 200 spots for new poems and about 200 poets post daily -- so we do try to only post 1-3 poems in one day, so other poets do not get pushed off the page. I am fairly certain that you are just enthused to find a site to post your words, but I thought you might want a heads up, to keep the peace.:)"

I have heard several poets grumble about those UBER POSTERS. Maybe, we should let new poets know as kindly as possible what posting 100 poems in 24 hours does.

That being said, years and years ago I joined a writing newsgroup and was excited to share my words. I posted about 30 poems in a row and someone proceeded to bite my head off, stating I was a rude toad deserving to be booted. I had no idea what I had done. I became ashamed, embarassed and felt that I could no longer be a part of the site because I was such an idiot, uncouth and about as novice as a new penny.

When I apologized and said that I would leave the site, willingly, the person who'd left me the note THEN felt like the idiot, felt horrible for her words and realized I was just a gangly poet itching to run with the wind.

SO.... what do you think?

Let them know as politely as possible? Hush up until they learn on their own? Should this be mentioned in the rules on Soup (ie. vulgarity etc) as a simple consideration?

Hugs
Cyndi

PS I AM TOTALLY BUMMED OUT THAT BECCA HAS LEFT!

FOLKS, YOU ARE ALL APPRECIATED HERE, BY MANY POETS, SOME WHO GET YOU, SOME WHO DON'T, BUT YOU BELONG HERE, IN THIS PLACE OF MISFIT WRITERS...

Not rude at all Cyndi. I hadn't even realised that that happened (I to look at the new poems by poet page), but I am a greedy poet, who tends to keep her poems to herself for a while and even then, might keep a few back for when I eventually get my poetry book together!

i am in total agreement with you. it makes me crazy when i see so many posts in a row and i've written a couple of poems about it. i don't see why there is not a rule made to correct this. however, i'm glad i read all the comments here and i'll take andrea's advice from now on. i've always read the "new poems" list, but i think it's time to try andrea's way.

I think new poets should be told ever so nicely that 25 or more poems at one time is way too many.I agree with Francine down below as I too skip over a massive amount of poems posted one after another. And that's a shame cos they might be good ones but I just get irked.Too bad TPS doesn't impose a limit of say maybe 10 posts a day. This would give everyone a chance...

Early on, I wrote every time I saw someone over post. I do not believe anyone took the hint. I have asked poetry soup to initiate a limit of at most 8 poems a day, but would prefer 5 or 6. I'm pretty sure they can change the software to do this. However, I think enough of us will have to ask them. It may not be possible. I have never gotton an answer from them on that, and didn't push it.

This does not effect me because I simply choose NEVER to see the list entitled POEMS-NEW. Please, people, DON't VIEW that LIST> Just go to NEW POEMS- BY POETS. On that list, nobody can hog the list. YOu will only see the person's LAST post he made. It's the only way to view poems by the lists here. The other way sucks!!!

Becca? Rebecca Lucas? We were talking two days ago and she didnt mention anything... What's happened? Regarding your question... No, it's not rude. It was a nice heads up. Regarding the multi-posting...We've talked about this issue many times. I use to hung out in the "New Poems By Poets"... and I have no problems. What's happened to Rebecca?

I have no idea what transpired, Ruben. I do know that she emailed a few people, that it had something to do with a "hateful" comment and that she chose to not get Soup Admin involved. Check out Frank's blog. She's an awesome poet, very sweet and I'm sad to see her go :( See if you can use that charm of yours, hmm ;-) ? Hugs, Cyndi

Hi I would have taken that with the good grace it was given Cyndi. I put a comment like that on a new poet once at first he took it wrong but then realised what I meant. He has only posted about three at a time since and they are all good xx Good Blog Cyndi xx

Hangs my head...I posted 4, I think, Yesterday. They were quickly lost on the page though. I often go weeks without posting anything and then I have a day of inspiration and my muse befriends me again and I get excited to share. Of course I have few readers this way too. I think it was not rude and PS should indeed put a limit on the number of posts in a 24 hr period. Good blog !!

Hey, hon, we've all at times posted a few above... maybe 5?... perhaps we were busy that week or like you said got inspired and want to share. But 100 in one day? Still, I do understand EXUBERANCE :) Ah, as poets, don't we all?
  1. Date: 1/9/2013 9:14:00 AM
Cyndi, i harp on alot about this hugh amount of posting at once.. tps should limit the amount of poems one can post in any day.. then there would be no need of comments about the issue needed..., good blog.. the other day, up to a hundred was posted by one new commer...

Cyndi, I think your note is spot on and very nicely put. I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt when at 1st they mis-step. I did the same thing when I was new. I was sooooo excited to find a spot for my poems - not just to share, but also to archive on-line, that I started dumping my entire portfolio at that time onto the web-site. Some one also shared a similar, kindly worded, piece of advice to me. I was not intending to be rude. I was just over-enthusiastic, as I am sure are many who are new to this site. I think your note was kind and informative - and, for their sake and ours, I hope your message was received in like kindness. Joe

The note was informative, not rude, and it would be wonderful if the soup limited people to , say, 10 poems per day, giving others more exposure before being bumped from the new poems list because of the over zealous

oh, and when I see someone has posted 20 or so poems, I don't read any of them usually, or maybe one if I'm curious, so they really are doing themselves a disservice, they don't get more exposure, in fact they get less
  1. Date: 1/9/2013 8:16:00 AM
Cyndi when I first join the soup I posted 40 poems on my first day. I had a poet approach my poetry in the nicest manner. Do you recall my first poems. LoL I removed 39 of the poems the following day. The male poet who advised me during my first two days on the soup. Was correct. How would anyone ever read my poems that way? This is kind of rude in a way. However we need to know. I think the soup should have a limit. Tehehe. A month ago I posted 2 poems and felt ever so guilty. Good blog. Hope you get the point across. Sandy
