About CYNDI MACMILLAN
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo Writing a biography irks me. How much to reveal? What tidbits to conceal?

The Basics: I’m a 45 year-old, stay-at-home mom of an adorable two year old girl. I’m happily married to a wonderful man who is my living contradiction, the quiet to my loud, the calm to my frantic. Life continually amuses, bemuses and confuses me.

My first poem, which I wrote at five, was entitled, “Lov is Magik” and my father kept the fading, folded paper I scribbled it upon in his wallet for decades. I have tinkered in poetry ever since, but my main passion is fiction. My short stories have been published in the local papers. Occasionally, I dabble with creative non-fiction. I have a several chapters of a book completed which I’m hoping to submit to Avalon Books.

Despite years of living in Ontario, I will always consider myself foremost a Montrealer. Now living in Waterloo County, home of Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, I am content in our downsized apartment which is close to uptown, but overlooks Laurel Creek.  Though considered Canada’s Silicon Valley, the city is surrounded by a picturesque countryside filled with Mennonites. It is not uncommon to see a Mercedes Benz carefully pass a horse drawn wagon. Even our local hardware stores provide parking for buggies. We have many wonderful festivals, two universities, and culture galore.

I spent years as an E.C.E. teacher and adore children. Now, that I have one of my own –after 16 heartbreaking years of infertility – my days are filled with finger paints and drinking imaginary tea from tiny pink tea cups. Sleep is a distant memory and writing is my night time balm. My hubby works evening shifts. After my girl is asleep, my imagination runs wild and I write.

I am a Jill of all trades. I've worked as a personal care attendant in a home for young people with physical and developmental challenges. Had a short go as a dishwasher in my younger days, oh joy.  I've also been an engraver, a store manager, a cashier at the Sally Anne, but my last job was as at an office where I worked on databases (I WISH I was a geek.)

As a newer member of Poetry Soup, I am often dazzled by its diversity, the quiet, shy voices, the bellows in the foreground, the cackles in the corners. There is so much talent here! I love the contests run by its members as I enjoy a challenge.

Nice to meet you!  Looking forward to growing together, as writers and friends.

Hugs, Cyndi

NO MEANS NO, FOR DAMINI, KILLED BY RAPE
Blog Posted:1/1/2013 2:05:00 PM

NO

I will not remain silent as my global sisters are victimized, repeatedly,
unable to walk their neighbourhoods without fear.

There is no reason for rape.
Nothing earns men the right to force their way inside, degrade, assault.

NO

No outfit a woman wears earns a man the right to ignore her plea of no
No cut of cloth, no height of heel signifies a man’s claim to slap her into
submission, penetrate whatever orifice he prefers and then rut her like a pig.

NO

No time, no country, no city, no street, no building, no room, no age, no lack of
education,  no amount of dates, no amount of drinks, no drug, no marriage
license, no flirting, no flaunting, no parked car, no bar, no party, no long kiss

NO

No law, no political climate, no civil unrest, no war, no amount of prostitution
no pornography no video game no piece of fiction no phone sex no sex-ting
no his-story no her-story no past abuse no damned but she wanted it excuse

There is no reason for rape.
Nothing earns men the right to sodomize, traumatize, gag her cries.

I will not remain silent as my global sisters are victimized in cold degrees,
First by the men who choose to use them like meat
pulverizing, thrusting, biting and panting, ripping, slipping,
emptying their hate into bloodied flesh, brutally, daily,
the victims are mothers and daughters, voiceless, defenseless...

THEY ARE THE GUILTLESS

I will not remain silent as they are raped again and again
By judgment
By prejudice
By blame
By indifference
By stupidity
By lack of heart, understanding or awareness

NO

Do you hear me?

NO

Say it with me

NO
NO
NO

NO MORE

Do not remain silent

*Dedicated to Damini, a 23 year old student who died after being savagely raped in India. May we all remember the victims of rape are innocent and every nation deserves the same amount of empathy and compassion when violence occurs...

What happened in India, in particular to the young lady, and her friend who had to endure the terrifying onslaught by these vile men abhors me to my stomach. I sincerely hope they are made an example off and executed. Society is bad enough, and getting worse in certain countries. <*> Being stoned by women associated with this poor lady would be my sentence <*> Would I enter into a debate on taking their lives, not a chance. The vile scum deserve what's coming to them.

Feeling helpless is the worst, feeling helpless makes us walk small. appear as a victim, shine as a target, whether you are a man or a woman every human should learn how best to defend themselves. In the end all you have is yourself. The feminist movement in the USA reduced rape dramatically when it championed self defence courses for woman TAKE THEM. Do not think there is NOTHING you can do there are so many, many SIMPLE things you can do, whether you are 5 or 90 you need to KNOW what they are...ask me..I can tell you..

Debbie, most men do not think its ok to rape! And the Bible doesn't condone rape, whether or not rape is mentioned in the old testament. Read the new testament if you want to know what the Bible condones. I agree with you though, women should be well-equipped to defend themselves. unfortunately we live in a fallen world. :(

I am not familiar with those verses, but I will take a look at them. I do agree with what I read below...castration will surely do the trick. Why not, they circumcise women and girls in some parts of the world...?

Too bad the Bible puts forth rape as an everyday necessity aye? Judges 21:10-24 NLT)(Numbers 31:7-18 NLT)(Deuteronomy 20:10-14)..I won't go on but I could and we wonder why men [Oh they did write the bible aye] think it's OK to rape

I AGREE, with Joann; Castration! I know some women who've been victimized. The saddest thing is the mental confinement, that eats away at their self worth like cancer.

There is only one answer for rape - castration. Prison does not deter men, the knife may. From a Mother of a rape victim.

    Well...yes, that's the solution, Joann.

This breaks my heart, it really, really, really does. I am sure my tears have mingled with her own. Victimized or Martyr, what difference does it make now, her life was snuffed out, cut short! Even, as a victim of rape, those of us who have survived and grown to realize that the inhumanity of man, can never, no matter the extreme of his brutality, can NEVER touch the person on the inside. So, easy for us who have survived to sit back and say (in that light) "Can't touch this!" Yet, when a life is taken, even the Spirit has been victimized. Lord knows, I haven't the answers. Yet the brutality and inhumanity of man just goes on and on. Love and hugs, Cyndi, Catie. :)

Thank you Cyndi for posting this eye opening blog about this horrific incident. This young girl has united the nation rather the entire world in her death. To me she is more of a martyr than a victim. We really need much harsher laws for the culprits and much sensitized and civilized law handlers for the victims. May be after all the Mayans were right. Human race has perished, leaving behind barbarians. God be with her soul and her bereaved loved ones.

Andrea, there are nation wide protests by the youth against this incident. I am sure this case will be tried in a fast track court and many lenient laws will be amended for crime against women.

I heard about this in the news, Cyndi, and I wholeheartedly agree with this blog. Coincidentally I watched an outstanding movie on this very subject just last night. It was called "Things Behind the Sun"and was based on the actual personal experiences of the movie's director, a female who was raped and brutalized at age 12. It was akin to murder because they murdered her spirit. When it happens to the very young, they often do not report it and are very helpless. There are so many horrible things our society has to remedy.

Cyndi we are but a a small vocal stone in a wilderness but as each of us stands up against wrong that small stone becomes a mountain. We must unite against Rape of a person or a country. ...Seren

Sad that this happened and it should never happen to any worman..I don't know what the solution is though..I know just tell the men to not do such a thing but sometime they don't listen or get caught up in some gang violence or something..Sara
