About Gwendolen Rix
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo Greetings fellow Soupers! For most of you who don’t know me, my name is Gwendolen. I have been enjoying this website since February 2011. Really, I am just a big kid at heart who enjoys a vast array of poetry ranging from Shel Silverstein, Ken Nesbit, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, to  Jewel.  As a matter of fact, my father told me when I was in fourth grade that he even named me after his favorite African American poet, Pulitzer Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks. This news meant little to me at the time, but when I shared it with my class during show and tell, my teacher was quite impressed. (Apparently she liked Brook’s poetry too, as she read one of her poems aloud the next day. Imagine how red my face was?!!) If Mrs. Goolsby thought poetry was cool, then it must have been true because she had a glass eye, and everyone thought it was the neatest trick when she took it out to clean it during the day. From that day forward poetry was cool, I was cool, and a little poetry spark grew inside me!

Much of the poetry I write has to do with personal experiences in my everyday life.  For example, meet the new neighbor who visits my yard daily. I haven’t given this rascal a name yet, but just to be nice,  I wrote a poem about her called, The Polite Ground Hog. Writing a poem was the nicest gesture I could do after this “little princess” ate my cucumber plants. (Yes, this is sarcasm!)

Peace to you guys! You are the best! Thanks for your encouragement and your friendship.

Mr. Jiggle
There was a gourd named Mr. Jiggle
All he could do was wiggle
Every time he bounced
He gained an ounce
So every time he jiggled
I giggled

This is a poem by my daughter, Gabriella.  She wrote it in the 5th grade and it still delights my heart to this day!  As I was helping her to the restroom at the hospital last evening she said, “Mom, I was trying to think of words for a poem, but they were too gory.” I paused in a moment of despair and sighed, “Thank you, God. She is just like me!”

Ever had one of those moments of thanksgiving?

Please join me in wishing my daughter a speedy recovery from a very serious infection. She is expecting our very first grandchild on October 31st.  J

Hope she gets better soon! And tell her to write those gory things down - I've found it's better to let them out than keep them in! Plus, it may free up some other un-gory ideas in the process! it's cool that she likes poetry too :)
