Check out the southwestern sky about three hours after sunset tonight ( if it’s clear) and you’ll see two very bright planets, Jupiter and Venus. The planet Venus is not a star, but is so bright that the ancients called it Morning Star or Evening Star. In fact they believed that there were two separate objects with
different names, Phosphorus and Hesperus. It is currently (February 2012) seen in the evening in the southwestern sky, just to the right of another bright spot, Jupiter. After Venus, Jupiter is the next brightest planet in the sky. Over the next few weeks ( till mid March or so) you’ll see these two guys
getting closer and closer till they almost meet as one bright point. It will be spectacular to witness.

You don’t need telescope or binoculars, although these will show the crescent of Venus and the four big satellites of Jupiter. They say that a person with excellent eyesight on a clear night can see the satellites and the crescent with naked eye, but I never have.

I hope you like the sight.

I live out in the country, away from the city lights, so the sky can be spectacular on occasions like this. Thanks so much Sidney for letting us know, you can betcha that I'll be outside to look tonight! Thanks!
