About Thvia Stein
(Show Details...)
Bloggers PhotoI am a divorced, 43 year old woman of Scottish parentage with 5 amazing kids and 2 precious grandchildren. Currently I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I'm not an expert on anything in particular but have the ridiculous ability of total subject recall to see me through most any single-serving conversation I happen to stumble into.

I love writing poetry because there is something awe inspiring about the creative and skillful structure of a thought or idea.  It is not just what you say, but how you say it.  Poetry is simply the artistry of language.

Anyway, off we go to write great things and move great minds!  Thank you for indulging my foolhardy ramblings and for taking a moment to get to know me.

New contest, The Devil made me do it!

Blog Posted:10/6/2010 7:42:00 PM
Okay I'm sponsoring my first contest on the Soup and am really excited to read the resulting poems!  Thank you in advance for supporting me with this endeavor!

And here are the details:

What to Submit?

1 original, poem on the theme of The Devil made me do it!

Let's have fun finding out what trouble gets stirred up by our pitchfork wielding adversary!

Remember, the Devil is a powerful figure with unlimited stratagems.  The possibilities are endless here.  How does he appear?  What does he sound like?  How specifically are you enticed?  He is a master at his game so use effective imagery to help me truly understand why resistance is futile!  Make me use my senses!

And here is a short poem I wrote for another contest about auld Clootie himself:

Address to the Devil

Auld Clootie of corruption fame,

how smooth your fork-ed hiss,

deceiving hearts and tickling ears

with your sweet, seductive kiss.

Oh, master of enticement

how fragrant is your breath,

while whispering temptation,

condemning souls to death.

And in this wicked world we're

bound by your irreverent reign

'til heaven strikes a fatal blow

to your unhallowed name.

Rules:

Keep it clean

Have fun

Feel free to replace the Devil with any other religious, mythological, or legendary figure of equal malintent.

*Poems must be in the form of a sonnet, just for giggles!

*Poems do NOT need to include the phrase "The Devil made me do it".

Spelling counts and by all means be creative with your vocabulary!

I'm so excited!

Great idea for a contest Thvia, and that is a beautiful photo you posted. I don't really believe in the "devil." It's too easy to lay the blame on another entity when the evil ways come from within a person's own carnal mind. However, I'll see if I can come up with something if the contest is still open when I reach NJ. Been traveling hundreds of miles each day. The "devil" could be the truck driver I encountered who makes the road unsafe for other motorists. I'll give it some thought. Congrats on holding your first contest! Sonnets are a great form -- allowing for different rhyme schemes, but always having couplets as the last 2 of the 14 lines. I wish Brian Strand was still active here -- he was a sonnet master! Love, Carolyn

It's just me again :D~Thvia, I just wanted to add a suggestion. In your contest rules, you might want to put sonnet form only, at the beginning. A lot of people don't read the rules, especially furthur down. A lot of sponsors who have very clear form descriptions, still will get up to 1/4 non-form entries lol. I had "Tanka only" at the very top of my description, and I had multiple quatrains, couplets, a sonnet, 3 free verse and an ABC poem. Trust me, if you don't highlight your desired form at the top, you well get mainly 'other' forms submitted.

P.S--Are you looking for a specific type of sonnet? I mean, there are some bizarre forms out there.

Yes! Oh, I really dig this idea....hmmmm, maybe I should hide my enthusiam towards a contest involving the Devil!? Haha! Thvia, good luck with your first contest, you should have a lot of fun with this! Shoot! I write sonnets with wonky Iambic Pentameter(on purpose) and it drives certain people nuts. There are some great sonneteers here at the Soup, compared with amateurs like me, and they will eat this contest up!
