WHO WROTE THESE?

Blog Posted:10/8/2013 2:45:00 AM

while breezing through the works of my favourite poets, I found the inspiration
to host a contest
based on the language and spirit of 4 genres of music--- JAZZ, ROCK and ROLL, HARD METAL , COUNTRY... since the contest page limits space to 8,000 counts,
this prompted me to elaborate on the concept by sharing two examples of famous
artists who convey the essence and tonality of mentioned genres...

the challenge is NOT to write lyrics; but  to capture the mood of these musical types...

i’m glad to have received entries though we need to go by the rules, sweet guys! ( 2 of them have no names and listings of genre chosen)...

moving on, here are the verses of well-renowned poets... poem 1 may be
classified as COUNTRY, and poem 2 seems HARD METAL to me... can you guess who
they are?

have a ball and groove to the beat... not hard, is it?... come and join;
send me a mail if you need clarifications.. others have!...

POEM 1

The dome
of the capitol looks to the Potomac river.
Out of haze over the sunset,
Out of a smoke rose gold:
One star shines over the sunset.
Night takes the dome and the river, the sun and the smoke rose gold,
The haze changes from sunset to star.
The pour of a thin silver struggles against the dark.
A star might call: It’s a long way across.

POEM 2 ( excerpts)

Pure? What does it mean?

The tongues of hell

Are dull, dull as the triple

Tongues of dull, fat Cerberus

Who wheezes at the gate. Incapable

Of licking clean

The aguey tendon, the sin, the sin.

The tinder cries.

The indelible smell

Of a snuffed candle!

Love, love, the low smokes roll

From me like Isadora’s scarves, I’m in a fright

One scarf will catch and anchor in the wheel,

Such yellow sullen smokes

Make their own element. They will not rise...

I did a few and might post one, Nette. Can you help me regarding the difference between rock and roll and heavy metal? I like your concept though there's a lot going inside my head.

Did some snooping. Carl Sandburg and Sylvia Plath come from different poles of the poetic world. Now, I'm beginning to feel small, waah. Interesting challenge from you; am all shook up. Thank you!

The last one feels either jazzy or maybe hard rock as you say. The first one yes could be more country. Oh my gosh, I just went back and saw that these are not by Soup poets but by renowned poets. Ruben seems to know that Sylvia Plath did the second one. Not my kind of poetry so I would never have known that. However, it is very smart sounding. As for the first one, who did it?
