I WAS ME

First I was me,

Selfish as can be,

Wanting everything from A to Z

And wanting it all for me.

Then I became we,

A part of an us.

I learned to share, give and take

I learned how to trust.

Next I was you,

Believe me it's true.

I would rather give than receive,

It was you I wanted to please.

Now I am them,

A family man.

Giving my children,

All that I can.

If you look real close,

It is easy to see,

I am older and wiser,

And no longer a me.

In Memory of An Old Friend

Blog Posted:7/5/2012 1:14:00 PM
I wrote this poem, "The Day We Burned Doug Richter",

http://www.poetrysoup.com/poems_poets/poem_detail.aspx?ID=299834

over one year ago.  I don't know exactly what brought that memory to mind at that time other than the fact it was a pretty vivid childhood memory that I have carried around with me throughout the years.

I lived in Centerville, Ohio at the time but have long since moved away from the area and from the many friends I had back then.

I just learned through some facebook friends that I have reconnected with that the Doug in this poem, one of my few real-life-stories, passed away earlier this morning.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and I just thought I would post the link to the poem here once again for whatever reason.

Rest in Peace my old friend.

Joe

Hi ya Joe. It is a small small world just like the Disney song goes...I have been racking my brain to see if I know this friend of yours...were you or Doug associated with Centerville Swimming, the Sharks swim club, or WTRC?...My kids swam competitively for 6 years and quite possible our paths may have crossed. I still live on the edge of Centerville to this day!...My heartfelt tho'ts are with you today as you are mourning the loss of a childhood friend. He seemed to be quite the outdoorsy type since he was an Eagle Scout leader and firefighter...Hang in there, Joe. (Your poem here is quite an amazing story. ) Best regards, gwendolen

I think it was incredible how he tried to cover for you guys after what happened with the fire. He must have been an incredible friend. it is really sad to see people in your own age group just disappearing!! Yes, may he rest in peace.
