Bloggers PhotoHi it is time i introduced myself, I was born in Skipton Yorkshire, England, and still have a accent belonging to my birth place. in 1966 my wife Elaine and i and our two sons moved to New Zealand, where the boys were raised. then we  moved on to the city of Perth  in Western Australia.
After 45 years away we both decided to have a move back to the yorkshire dales where we were raised. leaving our children and grandchildren in what i consider the best places on the planet. (NZ-OZ)
Our reason for the move back to the uk was to be able to discover our back yard so to speak, and we have a desire to go to europe, especially scandinavia and germany.
I would like to say how much i'm enjoying my trip here on soup, and really loved the poems posted, my bigest problem being time, i always seem to be catching up, being able only to spend two to three days on here, even then with limited hours, so please forgive me if my comments seem later than most.  I also love football (soccer) Newcastle United in England being my team, then music, all kinds but mainly Rock 'n' Roll, i'm  a avid record collector, especially old vinyl LP's of the Fifties. my favourite poet is W. H Davies, along with a few on soup here, I do not get a lot of time to read these days, but my favourite Author is Dennis Wheatley, also i love  the the Bronte Sisters, being raised only 10 miles from Haworth, one gets a real feel for their literature, when one visits the area.   Harry

I have submitted the Glossary of Literary Terms to TPS and it will appear under the ARTICLES shortly. I hope that this will help to demystify rhyme and other issues raised in blogs recently. Love, Su

You are welcome, Harry. Diversity is what makes for interesting reading. It would be a dull day when we all conform to the same set of rules or write in the same voice. Love, Su

thank you all for your input, i really appreciate, your comments.. yes Brian the two words are omitted and as for going to the net, well sometimes just like the syllable count, the U.S differs from (my) English, as indeed does Australian and New Zealand...again thanks alot everyone....

This point Andrea was a key aspect of W C Williams poetic guidance, when he wrote in the American dialect of English, against what he saw as the 'imprisonment of poetic classicism' .A kind of 'War of poetic independence '.Like the original time has proved him successful, as poetry is an oral art or it is nothing..So keep creating your way .Rgds Brian

hey, (there is a rhyme right there) with prey and pray!! Harry, I actually love exact rhyme but only in strict forms. Near rhyme works well in modern verse. and internal rhyme is great in free! One of the best gifts I ever got was a big rhyming dictionary, but the pages are so worn, they keep coming out of the book. When I am online, I just type in google "rhyme with grey" and I get all kinds of options. they even give near rhymes for ya!! I agree with Brian. Just rhyme by your dialect. I say many three syllable words as if they were two. My eastern coast friends say I am not rhyming them, but I say I am!!!

Harry ..prey and pray.. are pronouced the same in English.I've got the same book so clearly an oversight on their part.(It happens!). As a general rule a poet should be able to rhyme words with the way he or she says a word in their local dialect of English.(with maybe a note for the reader until PS get around to accepting audio postings of our poetry) That's the beauty of both spoken English and oral free verse.Best wishes with your creative endeavours.Rgds Brian

Type in your search engine "Rhyming Dictionary"that should give you a way to rhyme words..In America I was told by the English teacher not to spell gray the color grey..She said that was the old English..Prey is like a wolf preying on a lamb..Pray is like saying a prayer..Sara

Exact rhyme is boring..boring! The following site shows near rhyme or half rhyme or slant rhyme all of which are much more sophisticated [adult] Mr. O just stop doing exact rhyme and you'll enjoy it much more! http://www.rhymezone.com/ Also check out the free download of Verse Perfect

Type in "prey" and it will take you to the Rhyming Zone. You will be spoiled for choice. Scroll down and at the bottom, you will see: Near Rhymes..... enjoy :-)

BTW The link you quote here, Debbie, is the one which PS has got listed here on the left of your screen: Rhyming Dictionary. Also: Rhyme in Poetry

I agree with you, Debbie. I love the challenge of thinking of unusual rhyme - not commonly found in any rhyming dictionary. I write poertry in diffent languages (not Macaronic Verse though) and it helps to keep my hand in. Love, Su

That's why I dont like rhyming! : ) I wonder about what you can do with those options (play, slay, grey)... well, the prey could be grey...but it doesn't add up. Good luck and I'll check this poem when you finish it. Have a great Sunday! Ruben.

prey (pronounced: pra - long "a"). It could be rhymed as Assonant or Consonant. Assonant (rhyming the vowel sounds only); Consonant (rhyming the consonants only). For the sake of rhyming in poetry, there are MANY rhyming schemes and I would consider the examples which you use here, as rhyming words. Some words do not appear in the rhyming dictionary as it they are not perhaps considered to be in common use in poetry. I am soup mailing you an extract from my book. I hope it helps.

To the greedy politicians we all fall prey/ It is then perhaps of scant help to pray.

and rhyming only the consonants: pray... :-)

Please note that I had to send it via soup mail in 3 parts.

To me it rhymes...i think some like the perfect rhymes like..dark, park, mark, instead of slant rhymes like.... Beelzebub, smell the blood, which i think is a more difficult way to rhyme than the traditional. But what do I know? Interesting Harry!
