Introducing my

Favorite poem of the week.

~ The night is young~

By: Adam Sliwa

In the night when I can not sleep,

when I dream about dreaming

when even God is sleeping

and the devil is out looking

for lost souls.

I think about silly things,

I think about the baker

who just woke up, his

poor wife, leaving a

warm bed for a warm

oven, the small old

security man counting

every minute regretting

ever being born.

The garbage man

desperately thinking

of how to find a woman.

All these poor men

who are not allowed to

sleep.

I slowly smoke my

cigarette illuminating

the city with every drag.

I dedicate every puff to

all these lost souls.

The night is young

the stars are out dancing

accompanied by the

moon, like an old

wedding orchestra

and their seasoned

company, they know each step,

each rhytm.

And I am alone with my pillow

thinking of all the beautiful women

somewhere, somewhere far away.

In Paris, Buenos Aires, Beijing

New york Addis Ababa and even Beirut.

What are they doing what

are they thinking??'

God is asleep the devil

is out working, my question

is blowing in the wind..

I dream a little dream of them

and hope they dream a little

dream of me.

Because in lala land

everything is possible.

Are you a mother OR, at one point in time thought your mother was the meanest mother in the world.... (this blog is for you)
Blog Posted:11/19/2012 12:25:00 PM

"The Meanest Mother"

I had the meanest mother in the whole world.  While other kids ate

candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast. When others

had cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich.  As you can

guess, my supper was different than the other kids' also.

But at least, I wasn't alone in my sufferings.  My sister and two

brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times.   You'd

think we were on a chain gang.  She had to know who our friends were and

where we were going.  She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, that

we be gone one hour or less--not one hour and one minute. I am nearly

ashamed to admit it, but she actually struck us.  Not once, but each

time we had a mind of our own and did as we pleased.  That poor belt was

used more on our seats than it was to hold up Daddy's pants.  Can you

imagine someone actualy hitting a child just because he disobeyed?  Now

you can begin to see how mean she really was.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath.  The other kids always

wore their clothes for days.  We reached the height of insults because

she made our clothes herself, just to save money.  Why, oh why, did we

have to have a mother who made us feel different from our friends?

The worst is yet to come.  We had to be in bed by nine each night

and up at eight the next morning.  We couldn't sleep till noon like our

friends.  So while they slept-my mother actually had the nerve to break

the child-labor law.  She made us work.  We had to wash dishes, make

beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things.  I believe she laid

awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

She always insisted upon us telling the truth, the whole truth and

nothing but the truth, even if it killed us- and it nearly did.

By the time we were teen-agers, she was  much wiser, and our life

became even more unbearable.  None of this tooting the horn of a car for

us to come running.  She embarrassed us to no end by making our dates

and friends come to the door to get us.  If I spent the night with a

girlfriend, can you imagine she checked on me to see if I were really

there.  I never had the chance to elope to Mexico.  That is if I'd had a

boyfriend to elope with. I forgot to mention, while my friends were

dating at the mature age of 12 and 13, my old fashioned mother refused

to let me date until the age of 15 and 16.  Fifteen, that is, if you

dated only to go to a school function.  And that was maybe twice a year.

Through the years, things didn't improve a bit.  We could not lie

in bed, "sick" like our friends did, and miss school.  If our friends

had a toe ache, a hang nail or serious ailment, they could stay home

from school.  Our marks in school had to be up to par.  Our friends'

report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for

failing.  My mother being as different as she was, would settle for

nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put

to shame.  We were graduated from high school.   With our mother behind

us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the

pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother.  Out of four

children, a couple of us attained some higher education.  None of us

have ever been arrested, divorced or beaten his mate.   Each of my

brothers served his time in the service of this country.  And whom do we

have to blame for the terrible way we turned out?  You're right, our

mean mother.  Look at the things we missed.  We never got to march in a

protest parade,  nor to take part in a riot, burn draft cards, and a

million and one other things that our friends did.

She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults.

Using this as a background, I am trying to raise my three

children.  I stand a little taller and I am filled with pride when my

children call me mean.

Because, you see, I thank God, He gave me the meanest   mother in

the whole world.

Hi, sis PD! My mom is more strict than my dad. When I was young, she always hit me when I did something wrong. She was always the boss ;). She hated my running in school (ground) which I loved to do most when I was a kid. She was so strict with my study habits and suitors, lol. She wanted me to finish my studies and to pass all the subj, in school. I grew up quite scared to her but I love her so much. She sent me to study in a far place when was in high school. From then on, i seldom see her. Now, she's old but I wish I can stay with her someday. Thank you for sharing a nice poem in your blog. love/hugs, Leo

I have a 'mean' mother too and she still behaves as if I am still a teenager now, but I always remind her that I am an adult and married too. Yes, she was an iron lady when we were growing up and that has saved us from many regrets. She taught us to imbibe many virtues and I will always be grateful to God for giving us such an excellent and 'mean' mom. Yes, I am a 'mean' mother too, although I have just a daughter and I have resolved to make her better than I am. Thanks PD, for this post and many of your sweet comments on my poems.

Even today at age 80, she spends half her time cleaning a tiny apt. I simply don't get it!!! also, she takes 20 min, to brush and floss morning and night. no joke. My poor mom got so involved with her "fall" housecleaning, she gave herself pnemonia recently but because she works out she is recovering nicely. The one thing i have in common with her, the workouts! just mine are not inside the house!

I love how it turned out, PD . You had an awesome mean mom! The worst about my mom was that she was a cleanaholic. She was so meticulous that I had to get permission to have a friend step into the house (she'd have to make sure it was spotless first) . She would inspect my work after I finished. I rarely passed muster, and so she would redo it for me. This way I learned to do my jobs very shoddily knowing she would simply do it in the end anyway.that's why I am a crap housekeeper today. Well, my house does not look horrible but let's just say I spend 1/10 the time on it that my mom spent on OURS.

He knew my mother? I still managed to be good and bad! What she didn't see, couldn't bother her. Until one day her pastor had seen some things that the Lord revealed to him. She asked, I told her the truth, she cried because she had no idea, how many times bad news could've beat me home!....A Loving Mother Blog; good one PD!

when I was about five yrs old, we, (my sisters and I) had to stand on a chair at the ironing board, and iron clothes. This used to really MAKE ME MAD! One day, after about thirty minutes of whining and crying, trying my best to get out of it, I turned and looked at my mother, and I screamed "I HATE YOU!" Holy smoke! She came off the couch like a bolt of lightning, and was whipping my behind! She kept telling me "Don't you ever say that to me again!" Looking back, I never did! LOL love and hugs, Catie :)
