Never would I have thought I would start
writing at 73 years of age. I have thoroughly enjoyed my voyage into the written spirituality of poetry and am thankful for the opportunity.  In my four years here I have met many new and wonderful persons. Having them accept me as a friend has been a moving experience.

new law in Michigan

Blog Posted:12/11/2012 1:23:00 PM
What do you think about Michigan's new Right to Work Law?  I couldn't believe it!! What it means is now one can work anywhere they are qualified to work whether they join a union or not.  If everyone else there is in a union, you can not be forced to join.

Well, I've been a union steward, and I've seen both sides. I HATE what has happened to unions, its about more, more, more for less, less work. It used to be about SAVING LIVES. My hubbies 2nd cousin worked the mines of Cape Breton and was a key organizer for the union of mine workers. PEOPLE WOULD DIE DOWN THERE! There was little consideration for the workers, they were considered EXPENDIBLE. The union changed that. Sadly, we're a far cry from its origins to fair pay, safe conditions for hard work and responsible labour. If interested here's a union hero and someone I'm priviledged to have met. http://www.nupge.ca/news_2006/n18ja06d.htm my hubs in a union now and receives a decent wage.

Wish they'd pass a get to work law for our third and fourth generation couch potatoes. Twnkies folded, not because the union asked too much. In fact, they took cuts to save the company. The high paid executives kept their raises going and their bonuses in spite of the company losing money. Like Romney, they also took out loans well over the company's assets, knowing the lenders would be left holding the bag. Don't blame the union for Hostess.

Labor Unions provide an opportunity for workers to bargain collectively for wages and working conditions among other benefits. There is nothing positive without Labor Unions...at least for the workers!! They called the law: "Right-to-Work"!!! It's the Labor Union the responsible for enforcing laws, regulations... and "rights"... Of course, these "legislators" are lobbying for specific advantages ...but for the employers! : ) Charles: Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and a wonderful 2012!! My best wishes.

Like Chris said, sometimes unions ask too much. Like with Twinkies!

charles, I do not know enough about labor laws to answer this question. All I know is that Utah does not have many unions and it is one of the more prosperous states in the union for people having jobs. In oregon, my brother in law is union electrician, every time we talk with him, he is OUT Of work. I think it is a drag on the economy if a guy is sitting around collecting his union money and/or unemployment. I don't get pension or benefits and many americans get no benefits. Why do some people get to be so special?

Chas, sounds good to me as experience has shown me sometimes unions can overstep the mark at times, although they are definitely needed...Merry Christmas to you and yours have a peaceful time...David

Actually, I like that law, as it empowers people with more freedom of choice. Although, I am for the unions overall, in that they usually secure higher wages and job security. Here in Nevada, when they speak of it as an "At Will" state, which it is, that means they need no reason to fire you. So... it could be worse. Interesting blog, Charles. Merry Christmas to you and yours. hugs, Catie :)
