Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at

My Latest Contest/ Great Christmas Movies/ What will you be doing?

Blog Posted:12/23/2013 1:31:00 AM
It's been a while since I blogged and I just wanted to let folks know that I posted a new contest last night. It's called One in Five/ For Beauty Strive. I think it is not a difficult challenge and I am hoping to see some amazing little poems! I often ask for short ones because I like to print them out when I am ready to judge and read them on my bed!! One of my weird habits. But I also just enjoy shorter poems!!

I recently saw some really nice movies. if you plan to see a movie on your Christmas holiday, I strongly recommend the following: Saving Mr. Banks (the story behind the woman who wrote Mary Poppins and her dealings with good old Walt!) / American Hustle (a fictional story about a modern day Bonnie and Clyde, played by Christian Bale and Amy Adams. They are not violent, though, just clever with cons! This movie has the most nominations from Golden Globes!)/ All is Lost (released over a month ago, it stars Robert Redford as a man all alone and lost at sea and EVERYTHING goes wrong. He is sure to get nominations for an Oscar as well, even though he barely said any words in the whole movie!)/ The Book Thief (I just loved this one, set in the era before and during WWII and involving a lovely little girl adopted by a kindly man and his spunky wife and the surreal horror of that era)/ Catching Fire - Hunger Games II (well, I am sure many have been seeing this one. I liked it even better than the first one!)/ Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks' OTHER great movie of the year. I heard he got snubbed by Golden Globes for playing Walt Disney, but he got nominated for his part as the real life man kidnapped by pirates from his ship off Africa's coast)/ Twelve Years a Slave (the incredible real life story about a black man kidnapped into slavery and for me, a movie that all Americans just NEED to see ). Oh, and I almost forgot the one with such great effects: Gravity, (starring Sandra Bullocks and George Clooney, as astronauts lost in space!) These are just SOME of the great movies playing in theaters. I loved all of them and there are others too. I just can't think of them all right now.

Which ones have you seen? And if you have seen none of these I named. Tell me, which one sounds the most interesting to you? Hope you take my poetry contest challenge and also that you might have a fun day at the movies this holiday week! Merry Christmas, All.

you sound like a very sentimental gal, Deb. I get to watching those and they all seem so similar to me but once in a while I will see one that I really love. there have been a few that could have been theater type movies but I can't recall their names now. It's a fun way to get into the spirit.

I forgot one other really great movie called Philomena, about the lady from the British Isles who teams up with a journalist to try to find her son who was taken from her by the convent many years ago. It's a fascinating story and so sad that many kids were kept forever from their moms, even the moms who did not want to lose their kids in the first place.

Andrea, I would like to see all of the movies you mentioned. Great critique of each one. I've not been entering contests or writing much lately. Maybe a good movie would stir the muse. I hope to see Hunger Games this week. Merry Christmas. (I'm visiting Oregon where there is no snow at the moment)

I was in Oregon for thanksgiving. have a fun time.
  1. Date: 12/23/2013 10:16:00 AM grandson was able to meet the cast and crew while the film was being made aboard his ship. He has pictures taken with the director...(who has also done all the Bourne movies)....along with the young actor who played the Somalian pirate, (nominated for a Golden Globe).. There is a picture in my photos of Matthew with this first time actor, who I will be rooting for !! He was amazing for an unknown, in a first time role!

Hi you know, I too am a big movie fan. I could hardly wait to see Captain Phillips when it came out....we've seen it twice. It was such an intense movie, but made more special for our family, because the Navy Destroyer USS Truxtun, was used in the filming (called the Brisbane in the movie)...was actually the ship that my oldest grandson has been assigned for the last 3 when it showed up in the movie as the rescue ship, we were cheering!! (I have a couple of pictures of Matthew, our grandson in my photos). So far, I am calling that my favorite movie..but I do plan on seeing the others you mentioned. Hope to have more time after Christmas! Like you,I love the movies!!

I liked that one a lot, Charma. It's snowing here now and I really wanted to finally attend the aerobics class I never get to go to, but I don't want to drive on our unplowed street.
