Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at

that salty is also an internet slang or acronym for upset, annoyed or embarrassed? Have any of you ever used it in that way? I was thinking how to get more people to write a short poem for me, so I looked up salty and found these three main definitions:
1. Of, containing, or seasoned with salt. 2. Suggestive of the sea or sailing life. 3. Witty; pungent; earthy: salty humor.  Also it can mean "somewhat shocking"~~ though I never heard it used that way before.

It might be easy to think of many things to write about with "Sweet" but I look forward to getting some "Salty" entries because I love salty things!!

Remember, you don't have to write with one of those two adjectives in the context of food. Your poem can be something like definition two or three of "salty" above here or you can write about anything that you find sweet, or adorable. I added a new form of poetry to the contest list. You may also use five rhyming couplets if you please. And you may write about BOTH salty and sweet or you may just choose one of those adjectives.

And if you want to tell me on this blog right now, do you consider your taste to be salty or sweet? I like sweet but I lean more toward salty!!

So, the stick made it, huh? Yeah I was calling it a walking stick but I guess the proper term would be hiking staff. Glad you like it! And yes, I'm an O blood type. I like vanilla ice cream sometimes and my mom's apple pie...not cake..not chocolate...:(

Verrrry interesting. You don't like any kind of sweets at all?? I hope you are an O blood type at least, with all that meat you love to hunt and eat!! (I am wondering if the walking stick is at my door when I get home today!!!)

I love all your comments here, especially the poetic way you talked about sweet and salty, frank. Why don't you use that eloquence for a little poem for my contest? Oh, yes, Rhonda, have you had the pretzel icecream put out by Ben and Jerry's. With peanut butter and chocolate? To die for!!!

I'm crazy for sugar but there's something wonderful about the combination of sweet and salty. I can't resist a chocolate covered pretzel!
