Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO for PICTURE PERFECT ENTRIES

Blog Posted:8/21/2013 3:21:00 PM
Hey guys, stupid me. I had typed out an informative blog and lost ALL of it just now just for taking too long with it. So now i will do a shorter one because I need to get going.

FYI: Only 2/3 of the entries qualified with simple rules such as using correct number of lines, etc. Of the 2/3, only five are actually totally picture perfect in grammar, punctuation, etc.
I am thinking of just being lenient with others that were poems I really liked; however, what do you think? Should I be strict on all counts? For sure, the top three will have to be perfect in every way.

Later today I hope to do a blog about the main problems I am seeing with poems in my contests. I will quickly tell you some of the problems right now in case you want to do some quick edits.

BIGGEST PROBLEM #1: Punctuation. Some of you are using commas instead of periods. That is the biggest problem I see for punctuation. It's almost better to not punctuate at all rather than to use commas where the endings of sentences should be!

2. POSSESSIVE PROBLEMS : Using "it's" for "its." I will try to blog more about this later. Also don't be afraid to use possessive when you need it. "tomorrow's breath," for example, should not be "tomorrows breath."

3. SPELLING & TYPOS: Heads up to the ones who misspelled ENTHRALL, STARING (not starring), and DISSOLVING.

4. GRAMMAR in GENERAL: Much better than in my last contest with most of you. I was very pleased to find no problems this time with consistency of verb tenses. Way to go, everybody!!

OK, I have to scram now!!! Please check over your poems, especially for typos, spelling and really bad punctuation (I will give some leeway on this if it is a poem I really loved.)

haha, Chris, what you said under Charlotte's remark and mine. Using NO commas, particularly inside one line when they are needed, is the OTHER extreme!!!! That's the true running on of sentences. Using commas all the time is actually called comma splicing!

Yup, comma splicing. Hey, I realize that I am part of a dying breed who enjoys using periods and such in my poetry. BUT, I go down swinging -- I am a fighter, and no matter how too-cool-for-school people become, or how many poetic licenses people stock-up on, I will continue using some punctuation....even if I end-up as the last person left who does employ punctuation.

andrea, I am of the opinion that when it comes to poetry one can afford to be a little more 'creative' with punctuation than would be the case with other forms of writing...to a certain degree, obviously not when the poetry makes no sense due to the punctuation...this subject began to intrigue me after I was studying my book on punctuation (as I'm by no means 100% accurate with it) and I started looking at the use of punctuation within the poems of some of my fave modern poets and I realized that they were taking creative liberties with it and not always using it in a 'textbook' way...what are your thoughts on this?

I think poetry doesn't need to use 'textbook' punctuation. But I also think some people use that as an excuse, as a crutch to throw-away punctuation to the point that even within creativity(or being 'cool'), the poems stop making sense, or are at least very difficult to read. I am chuckling at Andrea's example below. I've noticed an even more hilarious(pathetic?) trend -- take Andrea's example and remove the commas....that's how a growing wave of people on the Soup are now writing: "Hi I am here how are you this is me writing with no periods I just (don't)love commas ok that's all"

Charlotte, let me illustrate for you an example of what I am talking about. Creativity is wonderful. But that is not what I am seeing. What if I were to write like this for you? Hi, I am here, how are you, this is me writing with no periods, I just love commas, ok, that's all. (this is something we call "run on sentences" and I really hate them!!! ) I am sure you do not do this, but I am amazed how little loved the simple period has become!!

Stick with your rules Andrea. You are not doing anyone a favor by allowing sloppy English when you told them it was important. I have seen winners in these contests who had not bothered to correct their English and spelling and so they didn't learn a thing. I have my new computer and am getting to know it and I and will be back reading and writing soon.

Joyce. ok, I am going to stick to my guns on the spelling and grammar, but hardly anyone is punctuating correctly. The thing is, some of the really nice poems are that way. But is it fair to judge them more harshly than the ones using no punctuation at all (which I consider the easy way out)? I think I will have to just disregard punctuation and focus mainly on spelling mistakes for this time!

Hi Andrea, Thank you, but I must say, because it's happened to me before---don't panic when you get timed out--just chill and type in the captcha and then click on the back button a few times and it should (usually bring back what you wrote). Otherwise for piece of mind cuz I know how painful it is to lose something, I will type it out on word and then copy and paste-----sorry you went through that cuz it major league sucks!-----Anyhow thanks for the note!

One time I was able to do that. But this time, I could not retrieve it. I don't even have time tonight to do a thing. Gotta get upstairs right now! Any suggestions for me on how to handle poems that are using commas instead of periods? I got a bunch of them and some are pretty good poems except for that!
