Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at

I was curious about other countries. the USA has Independence Day today. Does anyone from another country have a similar type of holiday? And if so, when is it? Those of you in the USA, what are your plans for the day? I doubt joe and I will do anything special. I have noticed a lot less activity here at Soup recently. Maybe a lot of Americans have traveled to see relatives today?

Also, I have a new contest: Show Me the Funny. Check it out, and please read the rules. I am going to try to keep a SHORT winners' list this time just to be different and to showcase my very favorite winners. It's so difficult to do that when I host a contest of tanka or other forms. I am hoping i can keep strictly to a top ten list this time! Have a good day, Everyone!

This is very interesting and informative Andrea. It is particularly interesting to hear from our member from the Betelgeuse star system since I have always wondered what their traditions were. I've seen their flag with the Orion constellation on a dark blue background. So thank you for sharing and have a wonderful weekend. Going to be 96 degrees here today--whew! ;-D

Happy Independence Day! Well, because I am from the Betelgeuse star-system(one of the shoulders of the Orion constellation), we celebrate our galactic independence from the former Imperial Moronovians, on wot would be July 1st of your earthling calendar(we of course use a different calendar system than the Gregorian). Our sister planet, Bellatrix(the other shoulder of the Orion constellation), and my home planet, celebrate Independence Day by juicing captive-bred Moronovians. This makes for a bitter, yet delicious drink which is semi-hallucinogenic, akin to your earth Absinthe. See, when we gained independence from the Moronovians, we figured if we simply let things sit as is, the Moronovians would build back their galactic fleet and try to conquer us all over again, so we basically obliterated their society while we had the chance. But we didn't eradicate all of the Moronovians during this cultural genocide of revenge. We have captive breeding programs, and show-case the Moronovian species in National zoos located all over our home planet. Of the captive bred Moronovians, we probably juice about 10% of the population each year to celebrate our Independence Day. This helps keep the captive-bred population in check, because those pesky little Moronovians are a very sexually active species.

Great movie plot, Chris: Now I know your birthplace and background. We don't drink such bittersweet concoctions here. Just having mango daquiries made with fresh mango off our backyard tree and Calypso Coconut Shrimp and later Mango Bread freshbaked by me. If the Moronovians ever have a zoo break I hope they don't come here.

I don't know about this plot you speak of. I am simply sharing a little about the Independence Day celebrations and history of my home planet.

Hey, lady! :) I mentioned this to you already, but July 1st is Canada Day (aka Canada's birthday). Canada is now officially 146 years old! I live in Ottawa, the country's capital, so there's always something interesting going on at Parliament Hill on July 1st. I actually had a spectacular view of the Parliament Hills fireworks from my apartment balcony this year! Happy Independence Day to you and all the other American Soupers!

Happy 4h July to all USA Soupers. The equivalent in SA is Freedom Day. Freedom Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 27 April. It celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.They were the first national elections in South Africa in which the franchise did not depend upon race.

Hello Su & Andrea: AUstralia Day)is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove, New South Wales in 1788
