Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

For Me, Couplets Rhyme/the summer couplet contest

Blog Posted:6/23/2013 1:29:00 PM
What do you think? I've always generally accepted the fact that a couplet should rhyme. However, in my contest,I think I counted at least 10 that did not. Even some of the near rhymes were not very "near" in rhyme for me. I just figured people would realize that couplets rhyme. Since the majority of my summer couplet entries rhymed, a good number of them will be on the winners' list as long as I thought they were nice poems. The ordinary ones will be placed lower or given HM's.

As for the unrhymed couplets, most of them won't be on the list. I will probably give HM's to those that I really liked despite their lack of rhyme. A few people wrote more than one couplet and those entries will be eliminated. I hope to have this contest judged within a day or two if you are someone that wants to revise yours. You can always edit them today. I never do any of the elimination process until the last minute.

I've enjoyed seeing all the different couplets on my favorite season of the year! Now I have to get busy on lesson plans and syllabuses for my school. I put it off and I can't do anything fun till I 'get 'er done!!" Have a good day, guys!!

Here is the dictionary definition: A unit of verse consisting of two successive lines, usually rhyming and having the same meter and often forming a complete thought or syntactic unit. (not just rhyme but also meter are important in being the same). Anyway, I may relax my rules a little bit on the near rhymed ones if I happen to really like what they wrote, The idea of "similar" implies for me same number of syllables and type of meter and those are the ones that will shine for me in my contest.

all the nearly near rhymes are telling me that almost everyone WAS trying to rhyme them!

You are correct, Judy. I just meant that in most cases, people "assume" they rhyme. I am generally a rhyming poet and most people in my contests are aware of this. That's why I don't understand why some people are not trying to make just ONE couplet with a clear rhyme. It is not a difficult thing to do. Anyway, in the future, for clarity's sake, I will say rhymed couplet to people!

Andrea, here's the Soup's definition: http://www.poetrysoup.com/definition/couplet -- it says couplets usually rhyme, but they don't have to. But I'm with you - I've always been under the impression that they're supposed to rhyme.
