Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

A Few Awesome Souper Poetry Reciters at Youtube/ Do YOU Youtube?

Blog Posted:5/8/2013 3:37:00 PM
Ray Dillard is a poet I have known for a few years now. I am sure some of you must have met him by now. Anyway, the other day he told me how he has his voice recorded on Youtube reading some of his poems. I am giving you a list of them. (Sorry the list is copy and paste type of link. Wish I knew how to make them hi-lighted so you could click and go straight to the poem!) Anyway, I listened to “Dancing Bird.”

To the sound and picture of this chirping bird, we can hear Ray's voice and his southern accent! It is so nice to put a voice with a person that I know. I remember when I got to hear Nikko's sweet voice last year and how lovely she sounded.

Furthermore, I saw today that Becca's beautiful poem about the color red has been set to music and includes lovely pictures as we listen to her reciting her winning color poem. What a sweet voice she has. I was not disappointed. She has a great voice for poetry reading. Here is the link she has at her Color poem “Crimson Awakening.”

Is there anyone else out there who has used Youtube for poetry reciting? I'm sure I've seen others of you but forgot who they were. Please let us know the title of your poem that you have recited online! I hope eventually I can be able to do that type of thing as well!!

It is simple Andrea.First record your poem on 'Sound Recorder';Second:Use Windows Live Movie Maker to 'make' video in 7sec clips(so a 70 sec [poem needs 10] Third;Add the recorded poem to the video clips via the option on Mivie Maker:Fourth add a few picture stills from your picture file.Save your video and upload via your youtube account.Roy's blog has a much more detailed guide. You can see/hear mine (using this simple guideline)by entering ichthyschiro in youtube. After you done a couple Carrie and others can help you with more sophisticated offerings.Get out of the boat! and give it a go.Rgds Brian

I highly recommend Audacity as your sound recorder and editor. It's free and will allow you to create multi-track sound files, remove noise, fade in and out and a lot of other effects. I have used it on my last two projects. A bit more technical, but worth the trouble.

Brian, when I ever get ready to learn this, I will need my nephew around to help me. Even reading your instructions here I feel like I am reading something from a Martian. I am technologically impaired!! I need to start with simple things like how to make cute colored pictures appear on my blogs!! I know if I really want to learn this, I can search someone out and make it a priority!! It's great to see you and others involved with this innovative way to spread poetry through the world!

It has been such a fun new way of expressing poetry.....I've enjoyed the three times I've posted on youtube.....and Brian Strand has many there now. So be sure to check him out. Ray's are great also, as are Becca's (two I think she's done). I hope more soupers will give this a try! It's a completely different experience hearing the spoken poem. Oh yes... Roy Jerden!! It was his contest and Brian that gave me inspiration to try it!

Let's not forget about Brian and Carrie. They're the ones who got me started. Even CINDI will like the video venue for our work. It doesn't lessen the love for books or written thoughts here on the Soup. Thanks for the publicity, Andrea. I hope Cindi knows I have a book available just for her! RAY

I'm an antique. I don't youtube, I only use facebook to upload pictures, I don't text (can't stand that whole text the person in the next room crap) and I am planning on buying a rotary phone, miss that dial and the bring bring bring ringer. What do I love. Books. Old and new, crisp and white, stale and yellowed. Kindles should be put into a big heap and set on fire. But I love the poets here, and their works... hugs, Cyndi
