Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at

And the Disgusting offender IS. . . .

Blog Posted:3/2/2013 12:00:00 AM

Some of you may remember that I blogged about my green smoothie this past week and how bad it tasted. Well, I later experimented by omitting the collard greens and just used spinach leaves, lovely cilantro, celery and pineapples and/or bananas the rest of the week. Sure enough, it tasted fine without the collard greens. So what I want to know is, WHO the heck likes to eat that nasty leafy veggie? I had no idea how it tasted until just last week and I hope to never taste it again! (I imagine Kale must taste about the same).

I sure do wish potatoes and corn were the BEST of the veggie family. Sadly, those starchy favorites of mine are probably considered the WORST according to nutritionists.

So tell me. . . .Which veggie do you claim as YOUR favorite? And which one do you think is the most vile and disgusting of them all?

Broccoli my fave and zucchini the least. Basically, I love veggies and eat tons of them, they comprise most of my diet and knock on wood, I'm hardly ever sick.

Ruben, ok you got me tummy grumbling here-- after I ate burritos, fettucine, smoked chicken and salad this evening (and nope, it's not the I nned to go to the toilet kind of grumble)-- I am actually intrigued what collard is like-- something like mustard leaves?? That one's also kind of bitter-- and oh, when I asked why you turned green I suppose it's because of St. Patrick's Day? I am seeing a lot of green avatars on here. Slowpoke me.

Im using my "Happy ST. Patrick Day" avatar! : ) Dont look at me that's PD's fault!

Only you put together pineapples and collard greens!! : P ...Collard green has a slightly bitter taste. Ruben's recipe: Cut off the white stems and discard them. Sauteed the collard green with onions, garlic, little pieces of chicken or turkey, salt, pepper...and Yummy!

I think this kind of cooking is for people who enjoy kimchi or sauerkraut. When my Korean students make kimchi, I am OUTTA there.

my grammer leave me-- I am lazy to edit I see I kept on saying "leave" when it should have been leaf I think.... it probably means I should leave here now, spent a lot of time here already, I better sleep-- thanks again sweetie! oh as for my favorite, quite a lot, but umm French beans are really good and asparagus! They just make my pee smell like asparagus though...

We can call you asp-pee instead of ennpee. hahaha. Yes, collard greens are bitter. Like kale I suppose, if you know what kale is. YUK

I am not really familiar with collard greens, not sure if it is that veggie which I read before that has a bitter taste to it? I don't mind eating veggies, and would eat almost any kind, from the common to the obscure (as in these curly, crimply looking beans that I can't even remember the name)-- ever heard of Ashitaba leaves? Don't mind the slimy ones either like okra but there was one slimy leave in particular that I wasn't really fond of, and the taste of the leave didn't appeal to me either-- it's called saluyot over here and I checked, it's called jute mallow. Eww. Just imagining that in a smoothie seems ick. I also find cilantro to be lovely!

Brussel sprouts - it keeps the people away.... lol... just kidding. I love all veg and I bake my "robot colours" into a quiche - yummy! I'm not a meat fan (since a kid - don't like the taste of it) and might have been the only kid on the block bartering my meat helping for my sisters' veggies. I snack on fruit all day - in season. I only ever make smoothies if it is hot out and a sit down meal is too much trouble. Enjoy your weekend. Love, Su

I love veggies of all kinds.....can't wait for summer to grow our own. Not too many that I don't like, but I am not a fan of cilantro...especially with Mexican foods (most people love it). Andrea...Kale is wonderful sauted in garlic and olive oil gently (as are Collard greens) and my favorite soup lately is similar to one the Olive Garden serves...a sausage/potato/kale blend that is delicious....But kale or collard greens in a smoothie......noooooo!!! Don't discard a good veggie just because of one mishap!!! :)

I love red bell peppers! For some reason, I have always hated celery. People think I'm weird for that.

I think it is understandable though I find celery to be tolerable. It has little value since it is mostly water! Bell peppers are really nice, Heather.

To demonstrate diversity in tastes--Take Davids and reverse it---I love garlic---and hate brussel sprouts--and I'll eat just about anything and love to cook them all---funny cuz I'll cook sprouts for those that like them---come on David GARLIC RULES--but it's difficult to fit into an apple pie recipe LOL !

Yes, GARLIC is awesome!!! too bad it effects my breath so terribly; otherwise, I would eat it all the time!
  1. Date: 3/2/2013 6:20:00 AM
Sorry, Andrea, I am thinking you just do not know how to cook collard greens. They make a very tasty dish when cooked right and served over buttered cornbread. yum yum. My favorite veg is....probably red potatoes, although I do enjoy sprouts too, the most vile to me has GOT to be cilantro and any other onion! HA! hugs, catie :)

by the way, you said cilantro and any other onion. I hope you are not classifying cilantro as an onion. well, for me it is nothing like onion, and it is very pleasant, like a refresher thing.

i am your opposite probably because I ADORE onions and cilantro!
  1. Date: 3/2/2013 5:22:00 AM
well now, andrea, there aren't many vegetables I dislike but something horrible that I tasted is called 'laver' which is a type of seaweed harvested in the area of the uk where I live, it's really sickly and slimy! I make a nice salad dish, it's basically just raw spinach, carrot and white cabbage blended to a fine, 'grainy' texture with balsamic vinegar and olive oil; you'd be pleasantly surprised how nice and refreshing it is and it gives you an energy boost too :)

I"d have to leave out the cabbage to eat your salad. But I bet it tastes good
  1. Date: 3/2/2013 2:01:00 AM
Hi Andrea, actually curly kale is nice just cooked and used as a veg, like a strong cabbage., sprouts I like to cook in a wok with garlic onions tinned chopped tomatoes the ones with herbs, salt and pepper more herbs if needed, put a lid on and let them cook very slowly in the canned tomatoes juice, tastes great. i just love to make Cauliflower cheese also. My Mam and Mamgu were both excellent cooks so i guess its in the genes. its only 8.52 and i am feeling hungry for lunch haha....Seren

ha never heard of collared greens... I tend to like all veg, I suppose broccoli may be my favorite, then again I love peas and green beans too, not sure I dislike any but there are some that don't like me, ie sprouts and cabbages they have rather a explosive downside lol xx
