Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at Shadowpoetry.com.

Why Xmas?
Blog Posted:12/15/2012 6:33:00 PM

Sometimes I see people getting upset about seeing Xmas as a way of X-ing Jesus out of Chrstmas. I always used it as a short way to write when I am in a hurry. I never took it as doing something wrong. There are many mentions  of it online but here is one source I found that explains why it is done and HAS been done for centuries. Hope you find this enlightening,  and happy XMAS to ALL.

The “X” in “Xmas” Doesn’t Take the “Christ” Out of “Christmas”
DAVEN HISKEY DECEMBER 21, 2011 5
Myth: “Xmas” is a non-religious name / spelling for “Christmas”.

It turns out, “Xmas” is not a non-religious version of “Christmas”. The “X” is actually indicating the Greek letter “Chi”, which is short for the Greek, meaning “Christ”. So “Xmas” and “Christmas” are equivalent in every way except their lettering.

In fact, although writing guides such as those issued by the New York Times; the BBC; The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style; and Oxford Press discourage the use of Xmas in formal writing, at one time, it was a very popular practice, particularly with religious scribes, who are thought to have started the whole “Xmas” thing in the first place. Indeed, the practice of using the symbol “X” in place of Christ’s name has been going on amongst religious scholars for at least 1000 years.

This is a very wonderful sharing my very dear friend, Andrea! In fact, I never have used yet X to shorten the word Christmas although I know that X is like a cross but I know this is acceptable for all. Merry, merry X-mas! love/hugs, Leonora

I have not changed my opinion about using the X..I think that if one is to busy to write Christ they are too busy..Only one opinion..I don't hold it against anyone who does it ...Sara

As a non-Christian I am always amazed at the use of Christ as a name it is not a name, it is an honorific title given to the a person considered to be the savior of mankind [the messiah] or an anointed one, interesting Andie the the X is called Chi aye [the alternate meaning of which is life force]. I had always felt using the x meant we were marking a special day. [like x marks the spot?] and also thought it might stand for the cross? The derivation of words is endlessly fasinating. Light & Love

Though I do not consider myself Jewish anymore the Jews are still waiting for the messiah the savior to come, I personally take the concept of man being the or an messiah as metaphoric meaning ALL of us have the innate capasity to become a savior all of us are creators and we must morph to our higher selves

There is also the fact that the X reminds us of the cross and the fact that the baby who's birth we celebrate at Christmas is the same Jesus who was crucified for our sins on Good Friday, something which especial little children struggle to understand.

I prefer the word Christmas. I know about the Greek letter and the "same meaning" but I'm not a fan of this kind of abbreviations. Im sure that there are many Soupers who dont know about it, thus, thanks for the lesson. : ) Merry Xmas!! : ) (I particularly don't like the use of X-words in the ABC poems, it's like cheating! LOL).

yes, ruben, precisely why I think ABC is such a lame poetry form, and I have always managed to find lame X words to use. I like to write fast. that's why I prefer Xmas!

Oops! : ) I dont remember if you've used a X-word in your ABC poems... OK....I only like X-words in ABC poems when you write them! : D

Thank you Andrea for your post.........That should definitely clear up the Myths......I often use Christmas as Xmas and have had people criticise me for it in the past...and although I had recalled it going back to Greek Language...i wasnt sure and didnt ever check it....so i will happily use Xmas now.....:) Shaz
