About Tim Ryerson
(Show Details...)
Bloggers PhotoRetired from the printing business in 2011...now happily living in Ponchatoula, LA close to my wonderful (and enormous) family. I have three beautiful daughters, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who I spoil rotten because that's my job. The bio picture is me with my oldest grandaughter, Dixie.
My goal is to write a halfway decent poem sometime...My favorite poets are Robert Frost, Edward Arlington Robinson and Wallace Stevens...I have read everything John Steinbeck ever wrote at least three times

Lay Back The Darkness

Blog Posted:1/4/2013 6:45:00 PM

Anybody ever heard of this guy?
Every time I read this I get chills

If I could ever learn to write like this...

Lay Back the Darkness
by Edward Hirsh

My father in the night shuffling from room to room

on an obscure mission through the hallway.

Help me, spirits, to penetrate his dream
and ease his restless passage.

Lay back the darkness for this salesman
who could charm everything but the shadows

an immigrant who stands on the threshold
of a vast night

without his walker or his cane
and cannot remember what he meant to say

though his right arm is raised, as if in prophecy
while his left hand shakes uselessly in warning.

My father in the night shuffling from room to room
is no longer a father or a husband or a son,

but a boy standing at the edge of a forest
listening to the distant cry of wolves,

to wild dogs,
to primitive wingbeats shuddering in the treetops.

You are so right Tim VERY powerful, and what we all fear for many of us have no one to even watch over us IF this were to come to pass. Fix your blog page Cher there's way too much space on the bottom ;)

Thank you, Tim, for introducing me to this fine poet. I love the example which you have posted and looked him up on another website: http://www.poemhunter.com/edward-hirsch/

Hullo, Tim. I have not heard of this Edward Hirsch before, or if I have, that part of my memory has dribbled out of my ear. His poem is enchantingly brilliant -- wot a strong ending!

Ahhh....Tim, you and I have similar tastes I think, for this is the kind of poem that I long to write, the kind of poem that speaks to my emotions. These are often the poems that make me sit in the car a while longer, while listening to PBS radio in the mornings to "Writer's Almanac", because I am so moved, and it seems criminal to break the spell of that moment of listening. Thank you for sharing this poignant poem.

Ithought I was the only one who put off leaving the car to finish listening.
