Just had to post this with Issac now making landfall...
7 years ago on August 29th Katrina hit New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf coast. We were living in Denham Springs, LA (just east of Baton Rouge about 70 mi. north of N.O.) so we did not experience the full fury of the storm but it was still very bad. Actually, the MS Gulf Coast got the highest tidal surge (30 feet)...the levees in N.O. overflowed but actually broke AFTER the storm had already passed through...Everyone thought the worst had happened...
Though Katrina was the most destructive storm in history it was not anywhere close to the most powerful to hit this area...Hurricane Camille hit the MS coast on Aug 18, 1969 with winds of 200 brother was in the Army and was sent down to help. He said there was no way to put into words the destruction...there was nothing left...he said it looked like an atomic bomb had been dropped... Mother Nature sometimes reminds us that she's still the boss!

I suffered Irene, Katrina (it visited South Florida before New Orleans), and Wilma... Be safe, my friend. Let us know if you're ok once the storm pass...

Hope I don't bore everyone with info-overload but please indulge me (while I still have power!) The strongest and most dangerous part of a hurricane is the northeast quadrant because of the counter-clockwise motion...this is also what causes part of the tidal surge because of the northern wind direction although the forward motion of the storm causes most of it I believe...the faster the hurricane travels towards land the worse the tidal surge...the warm gulf waters are the hurricane's "fuel" summers mean more hurricanes are likely...

Be safe, Tim. I'm praying for you and everyone on the Gulf Coast tonight. The images of Katrina's aftermath and Anderson Cooper in a boat where streets had been only days before as bodies floated by, I will never forget. Horrific...Camille was before my time. I can't imagine a storm worse than Katrina. We dealt with Andrew in South Florida, but I think the loss of lives associated with Katrina was worse. We prepare for the worst and hope for the best...hugs, Rhonda

Issac will only be a Category 1 or 2 hurricane at worst...we still have power but I'm sure it won't be long! The real hazard is that it is moving at a snail's pace which means it will dump up to 12 inches of rain and will cause severe flooding...

Issac left us with more water than we had in the past year, but little damage. We were lucky. I hope you and your family will be as well off after the storm passes.
