How Many Senses Have YOU?
Blog Posted:11/9/2012 2:57:00 PM

Someone out there in blog-land yelled. FIVE SENSES???? Yup, you have at least 5, though when you write, a lot of what you focus on is dependant on your learning style. Learning though your senses is a fascinating Science called Neurolinguistics.

There are tell-tale signs in your speech and writing which show which senses you primarily learn through.

Look through your work, think how you speak do you say things like

"I really feel for you?" a sign of a tactile learner one who needs to touch and manipulate the object to learn

do you say..hmmm

"I see what you mean!" You're a visual learner.

"Did you hear what he said "You're an auditory learner.

" The whole deal stinks to high heaven! [Smell is a big hook for your memory!]

When writing haiku or, when writing anything which asks for objective, factual input you stick with [;) my secondary scense of chose is TOUCH]

SENSORY INPUT

You don't talk about TELL what you THINK or FEEL, you report the facts as you see them, you SHOW what you are feeling by discribing an observed action....  [of course since we already agreed we all see them slightly differently you do the best you can to be objective.]

How many senses do we have?

It's not just the traditional five.

1.  sight (visual sense)

2.  hearing (auditory sense)

3.  smell (olfactory sense)

4.  taste (gustatory sense)

5-8. touch:
The skin senses
Because touch involves four different sets of nerves, the skin senses are considered four separate senses:

5. heat
6. cold
7. pressure
8. pain
9.  motion (kinesthetic sense)
10. balance (vestibular sense)

SOME SUBJECTIVE NON-Sensory Views are as follows

illusion = a misperception of real sensory input
hallucination = perception without real sensory input
delusion = a believe that is out of touch with reality.

If a trick of the light makes two people standing together look like one two-headed person, that is an illusion.

If you see a two-headed person where there is nobody at all because you're just plain drunk, that is a hallucination.

If you think you are a two-headed person, that is a delusion.

Including more and more sensory input, will make you a better and more interesting writer..

STRAY from your dominant sense..add MORE than just the EASY..

Informative write. I like how you said stray from your dominant sense and add more than just the easy. But Debbie how do we develop the said senses? I think my visual sense is lacking. I find it very hard to describe what I see but easy to describe how it makes me feel.

also try to narrow your field over vision put your thumb and index fingers into an L make a frame/ box with them..discribe the IMAGE within the box/frame artists, photographers do this BEFORE they snap the shot

hmmm because I am primarily visual it's hard for me to relate..hmm...you know something popped into my mind Vicky..try to deprive the other senses, try floating in water [body temp] that way your sense of sound is muffled and your sense of touch..open your eyes start focusing eyes on the small stuff around you and expand outward, if you had a recorder you could record what you are seeing

I don't disagree, that is the precise point I was making. Since all sensory perception centers in the brain what rationale says that some of the senses should not be used in haiku. Heretofore we have been told to use the 5 senses and now feeling is included. You just named out a handful of other senses that could just as well be used but no we are told to use 5 senses and feeling. The only one I saw on wiki that you do not have is a sense of Time Passing.

yes Chas..find out what senses you commonly use & EXPAND your pallette!
  1. Date: 11/9/2012 7:06:00 PM
I have smell hallucinations - I smell things that are not really there. The most common two are smoking, usually late at night when I am trying to sleep and I smell smoke or a cigarette (no one has ever smoked in my house); or peanut butter.

I had some really good scents yesterday. My wife cooked a huge pot of homemaid (pun intended) veggie soup. Am doing some research will try to post something later. Why do we not use these other senses in haiku. All senses are centered in the brain anyway, now that we know it.

how has where the scense originates to do with subjective and objective? A hoe enables an man to plant a field but that doesn't give the credit for the planting to the hoe? we could just launch into 'live is but a dream' and so NOTHINg would be objective..there would be no facts

Sixth sense, or subtle perception ability, is our ability to perceive the subtle dimension or the unseen world of angels, ghosts, heaven, etc. It also includes our ability to understand the subtle cause and effect relationship behind many events, which is beyond the understanding of the intellect. In essence, the sixth sense is very much like metaphor. It speaks of seeing THROUGH exteriors and into the heart of the matter. I LOVE THE SIXTH SENSE.
