Ménage à Trois of Lines

Blog Posted:10/10/2012 6:51:00 AM

The Twofer Contest is almost done,

so here's a primer for THREE [Just for FUN]

Get ready, get set, [one for the money, two for the show]

THREE TO GET READYNOW GO MAN GO!

Forms which can be done in using 3 lines are as follows

ABC, Acrostic, Alliteration, Blank Verse, Carpe Diem, Enclosed Rhyme [aba],  Epitaph, Free Verse, haiku [becareful if I don't think it's a haiku you will be out right away]*, Iambic Pentameter,Than-Bauk, Personification, Rhyme, senryu * [see the note on haiku] sijo

//*[These poems are pretty self explainitory BUT if you need help soup mail me] ABC, Acrostic, Alliteration //

Blank verse is H A R D, it's metered verse with NO end-rhyme!

Carpe Diem means sieze the day SO

anything you write which is in 3 lines which pertains to that theme is fine [easy pezey!]

Enclosed Rhyme

[ex: the rain in SPAIN/falls mainly/on the PLAIN]

Epitaph

A commemorative inscription on a tomb or mortuary monument

written to praise the deceased.

Free Verse
If you think it's a haiku but you are unsure I will...

If you are using poetic vehicles such as alliteration, simile, metaphor..

If you haven't rhymed...PUT IT HERE

haiku

17 syllables or less, about nature, in the moment, containing 2 parts

[one of which is a juxtaposed bit of additional sensory input] containing a season word

Iambic Pentameter
The tick-TOCK rhythm of iambic pentameter can be heard in the opening line of Shakespeare's Sonnet 12: when I do COUNT the CLOCK that TELLS the TIME

Than-bauk
conventionally a witty saying or epigram, is a three line "climbing rhyme" poem of Burmese origin.  Each line has four syllables. The rhyme is on the fourth syllable of the first line, the third syllable of the second line, and the second syllable of the third line.

Personification
Give the qualities of a person to the inanimate things in your poem.

senryu
17 syllables or less, about man, written in 3 lines, in the moment

sijo
Unrhymed poetry 3 long lines, each line varies between 14 and 16 syllables, with the middle line often the longest.  The first line states a theme, the second line counters it, and the third line resolves the poem.

If you have a form I haven't listed which can be done in 3 lines IT'S OK

JUST LET ME KNOW

PS Here a location for a whole sheet of haiku Wannabees

MOST are 3 lines ;)

Would it not be easier to give everyone free rein and let them write anything in three lines as long as it is aesthetic and lyrical.... Eg to write my Found poem, 50 Shades of Hay in just 3 lines (free verse)...

Not that could be construed as being either aesthetic or lyrical ;-)

Poetry form FOUND: Found poems take existing texts and refashion them, reorder them, and present them as poems. The literary equivalent of a collage, found poetry is often made from newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems. A pure found poem consists exclusively of outside texts: the words of the poem remain as they were found, with few additions or omissions. Decisions of form, such as where to break a line, are left to the poet.

My example: 50 Shades of Hay
  1. Date: 10/10/2012 3:18:00 PM
Poetry form NAME: NAME is a form of abecedarian or acrostic poem. Name is poetry that tells about the name/title of the poem, using the letters of the word for the first letter of each line. BEN: Ben is a fighter of great honor// Enduring many a trial with fortitude// Never question his intent//

For me the biggest trouble in actually writing what could be called a haiku [not necessarily a good one, just one having undeniable aspects of haiku] was learning the difference between SUBJECTIVE and OBJECTIVE, and the HOW to make the leap to the fragmented phrase/line. Because I am a visual person I have less trouble than others who are auditory, or tactile learners, I CAN ..objectively discribe [x] and I KNOW my associations with the images are simply that NOT the truth of the image.

one reason adjectives and adverbs are not used is because they 'color' the moment with the writers OPINION of how it looked, how it felt, and since it is to be A MOMENT/FROZEN there really shouldn't be more than 1 action..sometimes not even 1 verb..but certainly not more
Guzzi Avatar Debbie Guzzi Date: 10/10/2012 1:42:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

Once you GET that you can do 2 lines of a haiku fairly easily [not that someone won't say SO WHAT!] it is the fragment which brings the reader IN, SHOWS the AhhhhhhHA! the eureka moment is between the 2 parts, no ahaHA!!! no haiku

Kimo: A post-Haiku poetic form, consisting of three lines of 10, 7, and 6 syllables. This form of poetry was invented in Israel - they felt the need for a longer poem.... It usually describes one frozen scene that has no movement in it, ie it is static! Love, Su

Is a Bio not longer? Name; middle info and ending with surname? Carpe Diem is usually a statement, followed by elaboration and ending with a positive statement (second verse), followed by elaboration....But, I like your clarification and will "obide" by the rules :-) I will not chance the haiku "family", knowing that you know your stuff.... BTW There is NAME (family of Abecedarian and ABC poetry forms) as well as FOUND. I'm looking forward to this new contest. Love the photo of the imps :-) Love, Susette

what's hard about blank verse, Debs? It's just like starting a sonnet but you don't have to worry about rhyme!!! It's strange,I don't believe I ever clicked on a poem labeled blank verse here that had actually been written in iambic pentameter! I think people do not realize what it means. Anyway, this sounds like a good contest idea.
