What the Heck Do I Call This?

Blog Posted:10/3/2012 5:35:00 PM
I have thought for a long time it might be helpfull to have a short talk on
WHAT TO LABEL MY POEM below is a poem labeled "I Don't Know". I have left here a brief comment to help her. This could be labeled Verse or Rhyme

Almost Guilty

by Sharon Van Buskirk

Occasionally I cry,

Overwhelming joy,

Sadness is deprived

Seems Surreal

I found the real deal,

I feel almost guilty

Like it's a steal

Must have been a saint in a past life,

I'll soon be lucky enough to be his wife

{surreal/deal/steal/ & life/wife}

*pretty much anything we put up here can be correctly labeled as verse.

all verse eastern verse forms can be put here too

haiki, senryu, tanka etc

[if you are unsure whether or not they are correct content wise stick them here]

The poem below would come under Free Verse.

Fanning the Sky
by Cynthia Alvez

palms dance like feathers
fanning the lilac-gold sky
winds weave fantacies

under Rhyme we have SO many forms,

any form with an end rhyme pattern can still be labeled Rhyme

[Ballad/Ballade/Chany Royal/Chastuska/Clerihew/Couplet/Cowboy/Crown Sonnet

Curtal Sonnet/Dizain/Enclosed Rhyme/Ghazal/Heroic Couplet/Italian Sonnet/Kyrielle/Limerick/Monorhyme/Ode/Ottava Rime/Pantoum/Quatern/Quatorzain/Quatrain/Quintain/English & Sicilian Sonnets/Quintella/Rhyme royal/Rispetto/Rondeau&Rondea redoubled/Rubaiyat/Sonnet/Tail Rhyme/Terza Rima/Terzanella/Triolet & Villanelle}

I would say this is correctly labeled under Narrative because it does tell a complete story and used few poetic vehicles.

Misty White

by Denver Reese

Misty white threatens to consume us,
Feet slip and rope drag against the deck,
Their voices grow louder as
Waterfalls of rain pour into the ocean,
My stomach grows *as cold as the rocky face before us,
They hold on for hope and I let go,
Too late to turn back, I welcome the mist,
And all hands are lost.

Hmmm though it maybe Prose Poetry? THOUGHTS???

I find when reading through the "I Don't Knows" most are using end rhyme.

When beginning to learn how to write RHYMING poetry I would sugest you start with COUPLETS & Monorhyme, then move on to the 4 line groupings of Quatern/Quatorzain/Quatrain. From here it's an easy step to the Sonnet forms.

So, anyone out there want to step up their game and try a new form?

If I've done it a few times I'd be glad to help [Many many teachers on this site just ask folks love to help!]

After readin a number of new poems today, I have concluded most people just don't know and don't care what they write, or what it is called.

Well cher...'I don't know?' what to call her poem either but I DO call it damn good!...If I'm not sure I just call it 'Light Poetry'...Not sure about this but I believe TRUE rhyme isn't a couplet, mono, limerick or any of that other stuff... but strictly A/B/A/B or A_A_... or _B_B...right?

Interesting blog..I pick a form and write to the form..Sometimes i just let her rip onto paper and post as whatever like free verse or prose poetry and then let everyone have a heyday with it..Sara

A great informative blog. Well done. You mentioned a few rhymes I've never hear of... I'll be checking a few out.

Also Dee no one here that I can see has the skill of Mary Angelou or Chris Manse, both of whom could write to form if they chose to I'm sure. Time to break the rules when you know the rules.

Also there are MANY forms not being represented on our list of choices. I just wish all the categories were alphabetically ordered for us to choose from.

The only thing I don't like is going to a poem that is labelled incorrectly, seeing someone posting a long rhyming poem as haiku for example. You see it a LOT. I just wish they would use I don't know rather than do something like that. But this was nice for you to do. I hope those that need it will read it. Verse is a nice catch all, true and Rhyme catches all the rhyming stuff!!!

I could spend my time here listing sites which agree with me Dee re:Modern haiku and until we have a category for it, the above is not a traditional haiku & my teacher would not call it a modern haiku either BUT this blog is not hear to re-open the haiku wars

#1 at Dee, As I have tried to show if you don't want to think about what form you are writing in but don't want to appear unknowledgable a CATCH ALL is to call it VERSE. To me if you use "I Don't Know" it means you'd LIKE to know?

'Traditional' haiku can only be truly traditional when written in Japanese. Supposed 'traditional' English haiku is mere mimicry. I don't agree with mimicking a form.

This is not only an online journal for haiku writers, but also publishes a lovely hard copy version. It publishes/accepts a variety of haiku styles and disciplines, traditional, modern and contemporary. I completely support teaching traditional haiku, but I disagree in stopping English 'ku from moving and changing.

maybe I got confused or maybe she changed it...not sure Dee but I stand by what I said for me it is not a haiku on too many levels

I visited her page. She has it labeled as haiku. ???

Possible. But it COULD also mean, "I don't know AND I don't care" Soupers we've seen for a while who ususally don't use I don't know are probably wondering...but a new souper, who really knows? My vote? Give them time to explore the forms on soup, approach soupers and read the poems and posts. And you can still be knowledgeable and break molds. Yes?

and I didn't label Cynthia's write Free Verse she did ;) I do agree because not even modern haiku uses anthropomorphism and/or personification or simile, she does have 2 parts but line 3 is cause and effect ..if it was a haiku it has a weak line 3 and it is totally 'subjective' //a jewel of an image but Free Verse
  1. Date: 10/4/2012 12:12:00 AM
For different poetry forms (not found here on the Soup) which I have been trying out (just to keep my eye in), you may check out all my "I don't know" poems - there are quite a number of them. I have added a poetry forms name and a description. You may add your own contributions under Comment, if you like. I will welcome these. Also, fire questions: It is the only way I can grow - something might be clear as daylight to me, but as clear as mud to others ;-) Much Love to all. Suzette

Where I stand on all things ;),if you did it for a reason for emphasis say at a point of climax or at the end a dollop of 'offness???' is fine in any form, poetic license, so far ther are few who do this purposefully with knowledge of what they are doing [Dee, Chris A., Nikko, nette ... hmmm]
  1. Date: 10/3/2012 9:05:00 PM
Nope---Cyndi, I love the rebel in you, there are, however merits in forms (rules) otherwise throw everything out and screw it....part of the major league fun and inspiration, including, by the way, your most recent modern sonnet contest (which you tossed some rules into) is the challenge of them, and, if truth be told, like Bear Bryant once said, "If it's not whether we win or lose but how we play the game that matters, then why the hell do we keep score"! Luv Ya

Love you, you bull dog. Now, honestly, do you really think poets like Mary Angelou or Chris Mansel even consider what form they are writing in or do they just write TOWARDS a form and trust that the reader will either find something to enjoy or disregard? I appreciate trying new forms, reading of them, exploring works and examples, but I certainly couldn't care less if someone calls something verse or rhyme. It is what it is TO THEM. When it does matter is when you submit your poem towards a mag that is looking for a particular form, in which case I suggest that the poet read the magazine and see what the editor feels is the form's new direction. know the market and the readers dictate what is wanted and acceptable, says the fiction writer. xox
