Hello Friends of the Soup.   I am constantly learning from all of you, and writing is something I love, but never made time for until now. I have always been a California girl, born and raised in the southern part of the state, now living in upper Northern California. Surrounded by mountains, and beautiful scenery, I have great inspiration.   I think I have always loved to create, it comes from my Dad, and his dad, I suppose. Although my mother was the rock of the family, my Dad was the dreamer, and a cowboy at heart. I grew up with horses that he raised, and memories of him singing around a campfire on trips we took. He wrote poetry, and his own songs, and played guitar.  His father did the same thing when my dad was a boy.  My grandfather was a trail guide, in the early l900's in Yosemite Nat'l Park, where my dad lived as a child.  My purpose in life has been family. I am married to my High School sweetheart,  we went to college together, I taught school for awhile, then raised two fine sons (both H.S. teachers) and a beautiful daughter.  Have 5 grandchildren who we adore, and fortunately they all live fairly close by.  I've had a small catering business, but now we are both retired, live in the country on a couple of acres, with rangeland behind us.  We are down to one dog, after a mix of this and that!  No horses, although horses, cattle, coyotes, and all kinds of wildlife live behind our place. Our kids are gifted musicians, and one son writes poetry that blows me away, some which has been published. I love poetry and piano, all music, movies, camping, our little cabin in the mountains, but especially my family.  And I love Poetry Soup..and all the wonderful company here!

TATTERED BIRTHDAY CARD

Blog Posted:5/24/2010 8:29:00 AM
First of all, my thanks to my Soup friends for the birthday greetings of last week...bringing a little extra sunshine to my day! Thank you all!!! I thought I'd share this little family story (all true) of "The Birthday Card". It started years ago, when I was very young, my big brother (my only sibling) gave me a silly, rather ridiculous, birthday card. We have always been a goof-ball family...so I saved the card and sent the same one back to him on his birthday, and just joked that I was saving my $$ and it was cheaper than buying a new one!...Well, lo and behold...next birthday he sent the same card back to me the next year. Well...on this went...we both got married, and soon our spouses were included, and would receive this same card. Each time sent, we would take turns, and insert a message, little snippets of the year's events...marriages, birth of our children, funny stories, trips we took ..some together, some not...events that changed our lives, and a lot of silly little poems, ribbing each other about family or getting older!! . For over 45 years...this same card has been back and forth through the mail. The first postage was a 4 cent stamp...now it takes a big fat manila envelope and costs a few bucks to mail...but holds a wealth of memories, love and history of our two families. One day a reporter from the Sacramento Bee got wind of this...and we have been featured in a couple of big newspapers for our long, lasting affair with a tattered, falling apart birthday greeting.... Yes we are a goofy family...between my big brother and my own family we grew in numbers....there are now a total 26 of us when we all get together to celebrate a 2nd Christmas ......EACH JULY ! Love can come in an envelope....and the postage is well worth it!! :)

A lovely tradition between you and your brother. I know that old card holds more love than any new beautiful card you could buy. My late son and I had something of the same going on. One birthday I had purchaseds an especially beautiful and sentimental card for his birthday. After he had taken his gifts and gone home, I found the card he had missed taking with him. I caefully put it away and the next year I gave him the same card and told him what had happened. He was delighted and said he wanted me to keep it and give it to him every year. I did and I still have the card which he missed getting for the umpteenth time by a mere ten days. He died ten days before his birthday. Love, Joyce
