Hello Friends of the Soup.   I am constantly learning from all of you, and writing is something I love, but never made time for until now. I have always been a California girl, born and raised in the southern part of the state, now living in upper Northern California. Surrounded by mountains, and beautiful scenery, I have great inspiration.   I think I have always loved to create, it comes from my Dad, and his dad, I suppose. Although my mother was the rock of the family, my Dad was the dreamer, and a cowboy at heart. I grew up with horses that he raised, and memories of him singing around a campfire on trips we took. He wrote poetry, and his own songs, and played guitar.  His father did the same thing when my dad was a boy.  My grandfather was a trail guide, in the early l900's in Yosemite Nat'l Park, where my dad lived as a child.  My purpose in life has been family. I am married to my High School sweetheart,  we went to college together, I taught school for awhile, then raised two fine sons (both H.S. teachers) and a beautiful daughter.  Have 5 grandchildren who we adore, and fortunately they all live fairly close by.  I've had a small catering business, but now we are both retired, live in the country on a couple of acres, with rangeland behind us.  We are down to one dog, after a mix of this and that!  No horses, although horses, cattle, coyotes, and all kinds of wildlife live behind our place. Our kids are gifted musicians, and one son writes poetry that blows me away, some which has been published. I love poetry and piano, all music, movies, camping, our little cabin in the mountains, but especially my family.  And I love Poetry Soup..and all the wonderful company here!

In Remembrance --IDES OF NOVEMBER

Blog Posted:11/22/2013 10:47:00 AM

A November day, washed bright and clean

light rains had ceased, and skies were blue
But a plot, obscene, would dim the sun
In a deadly script, which paled Macbeth
A Lone Star light turned dark with death...........

I was about to stretch beyond my teens

all innocence upon the brink
As the callow child I was back then
I would immortalize between extremes
In my own small world, that I had known,
I would acknowledge the world in distant hues

And often held a passive view

But then, upon the landscape new

I was thrown to the wolves in black and white
I couldn't grasp those first words said
A horrendous drama, it can't be true!

Cascading, first with deep unrest

where cold war's threat, the South's unrest
with wars afar, I sat expecting
some deep resolve, as tales unfold
resulting good around the bend,
where naive' dreams had always been

This sudden turning of the tide

had come to change my voice inside...
knocking hard upon my door
deeply shocking,...to the core
rocking how I viewed the world

With an anchored face, yet, strangely rue

    Apparent angst, his stolen breath
He cleared his throat, and shared the news,
With Cronkite calm, as if a stone,
With cautious, stunning words to choose

In his eyes, the sorrow shone
I looked to him for confidence
The magnitude, too great to own
I needed guidance and a chance

to lean into his trusted arms
       this mortal moment too immense

I see it now, still clearly formed

The day was bright, with amber light
The sun was out, and lingered warm
Football games, a dance that night
Holidays had been conceived

But death
came crashing down with spite

Tragedy
as thick as thieves,

A devil's
plot to interweave

Outstanding work, Carrie. What a great blog for today!! I was eight years old and had very little inkling of what it all meant but everyone was so sad that day.

Carrie, I was a sophomore in high school and will never forget--your words recreate that day--those times.
