Hello Friends of the Soup.   I am constantly learning from all of you, and writing is something I love, but never made time for until now. I have always been a California girl, born and raised in the southern part of the state, now living in upper Northern California. Surrounded by mountains, and beautiful scenery, I have great inspiration.   I think I have always loved to create, it comes from my Dad, and his dad, I suppose. Although my mother was the rock of the family, my Dad was the dreamer, and a cowboy at heart. I grew up with horses that he raised, and memories of him singing around a campfire on trips we took. He wrote poetry, and his own songs, and played guitar.  His father did the same thing when my dad was a boy.  My grandfather was a trail guide, in the early l900's in Yosemite Nat'l Park, where my dad lived as a child.  My purpose in life has been family. I am married to my High School sweetheart,  we went to college together, I taught school for awhile, then raised two fine sons (both H.S. teachers) and a beautiful daughter.  Have 5 grandchildren who we adore, and fortunately they all live fairly close by.  I've had a small catering business, but now we are both retired, live in the country on a couple of acres, with rangeland behind us.  We are down to one dog, after a mix of this and that!  No horses, although horses, cattle, coyotes, and all kinds of wildlife live behind our place. Our kids are gifted musicians, and one son writes poetry that blows me away, some which has been published. I love poetry and piano, all music, movies, camping, our little cabin in the mountains, but especially my family.  And I love Poetry Soup..and all the wonderful company here!

POSTING NIKKO'S WORDS (Typhoon Aftermath)

Blog Posted:11/11/2013 7:38:00 PM
Our own dear Nikko posted this, under her poems......but I was so afraid that it would be lost in the multitude of postings.  So I'm going to "borrow" her words, and post them here, hoping more of you will see it. Please read, and please, please  if there is even some small way you can help, do it, they need us all. Thank you!...... this is from her poem section:

Heartbreak over Yolanda: Link on how to help typhoon victims in the Philippines, thank you
I hope that it's ok that I am posting a link here on how to help the people who have been affected by typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda)It is a link from Yahoo, which sort of consolidated links/ways in which one can help, be they be from the Philippines or in another country. This is in hopes that I could reach out to even just one person who wants to help in any means that they can... Seeing the devastation of the typhoon, not only in Tacloban, but in so manyother areas in central Philippines as well, such as in other areas of Leyte, and other parts of Eastern Samar, and I cannot wrap around my head the force and strength of that typhoon. I cannot even begin to comprehend the horror that these people are goingthrough right now, with the loss of lives and destruction and I can't help but also cry, just so overwhelmed, what more for those who were in the path? Somehow though, I feel that my tears won't do anything to help alleviatethe pain and despair. We all have heard about how every little bit can help, and I am holding on to thatas well...We have a word in Filipino-- "bayanihan", which pertains to the "coming together"of each person to help a certain cause. This also comes from the root word, "bayani" which translates to "hero".You can be a hero in somebody's life, in your own way, and I think thisparticular disaster is calling all the heroes it can gather.Tragic moments like these bring out something in us-- a solidarity that goes beyond borders and friction, where the pain is shared and compassion, empathy become palpable...tangible.I know I type in too many words right now but it is one of my ways of coping, not even sure it this makes sense. As I type this, there have been updates about another tropical depression (Zoraida) that is headed along the similar path that Yolanda took...how I pray and hope that these placesbe spared... I am grateful that Haiyan weakened as it reached Vietnam, and that they have prepared well for it.Please continue praying for the Philippines, for those who have been affected,to be given strength, patience and courage.Rebuilding their lives could take a long time, but if we can help in some way, it would mean so much to them. Maybe we can try to counter the destructionwith the outpouring of support and care. For all those who have sent positive thoughts, prayers, concern, donations,in behalf of my fellow Filipinos, I would like to thank You from my heart.http://ph.news.yahoo.com/reliefph-operations-for--yolandaph-135933279.htmlhttps://www.wfp.org/donate/typhoon-philippines-a
Some
of you have asked about one of the best ways to give funds for relief efforts,
and Chris (Aechtner) mentioned Doctors Without Borders (DWB) in his comment on
my post, and he seems so familiar with their efforts and as I looked into their
website, I hope that more people support them. Thank you so much, Chris, for
bringing light to this organization, I have heard of them before (mainly in
passing), but did not know much about it.
I
know that there will come a time when the influx of pleas for help will die down
(not just for this current tragedy, but in so many areas around the world), and
most of our lives will go back to the normal humdrum-- but hopefully we won't
forget that there are always so many others in need of our help, sad to say,
they're not just always on the front pages and are easily forgotten-- but there
are those who continue to help-- maybe we can also do our share to help those
who are helping.
Here
are a couple of links for Doctors Without Borders:
these
would be two links though, one is an option for a one-time donation that can be
specific for
the
Philippine relief effort (one can choose the option of restricting the donation
to that cause)
https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/onetime.cfm?
and
the another link for those who would want to support DWB in general, where
several options are available, either a monthly donation or a one-time
donation.
https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/?
Again,
thank you so much for all the support and kindness. God bless everyone.

Thanks, Carrie! This is really heartbreaking. I never imagined that this was going to happen. Me, myself, is sick for two months now, but I can't help just to sit here and see my fellowmen suffering that way. No food, electricity and connections in Tacloban, which was the most affected areas. Can't stand watching the daily news. It kills me seeing a lot of children crying out of hunger that are still in the area. Good thing that donations from all over the world are now coming in, specially the presence of US soldiers which I think is more helpful, for our fast recovery. Help us in praying and in faith. I am very pleased that despite the odds, God is still letting us feel that His love is unconditional, through the cooperation of each and everyone. Thanks to all the soupers who are extending their support to our country, The Philippines! Take care guys! Be safe, Carrie! I love you all from the bottom of my heart! Love, love, love! :-) - Den

My heartfelt thank you again for putting this as a blog, Carrie! I am hoping with you that more people get to read this than from my own page, and more people definitely responded here--- every little bit of help counts-- sorry mind is quite mush now, but want to say something about how ripples go far. Thank you again!

I am so happy to know that Nikko, Nette, Lenora and Arden, as well as their families are all okay. Such devastation is scary, even just to see it on TV.... Thank God for their strong Spirits. I will contact Doctors without Boarders...and by the way, I now work for United Way, so may be able to influence some donations in that manner...God bless all those affected and may healing and restoration come sooner than later. Love and big hugs, Catie :)

I'm happy that Nette, Nikko, Leonora and even Jake are okay. I'm crying day and night thinking on how to help. Don't care if I get hungry. The children need it more than I do. Please keep on praying! Hi Catie, thank you for all your support and prayers-- and also for your efforts at work. Yes, watching it from the news is incredibly sad and terrifying, what more for those who are there... let's continue praying for those who are there, not only those affected, but also those who are helping. The living conditions there are devastating.

It is heartbreaking to see the devastation of the typhoon, but it is also heartwarming to see how people around the world are helping us. As we say over here, "Bangon, Pilipinas" -- "Arise, Philippines" and we are going to do just that, with the aid around the world. I know that there are still so many problems along the way, but so many are helping, giving much hope. Hopefully, all the aid that is being given is reaching the victims, put into use.
