Carolyn Devonshire's Blog
Born in New Jersey, I now live in Florida. I was a journalist for many years and joined Poetry Soup to share poems and make new friends.
My poetry is very direct and to the point, even if I am sometimes a bit long winded. I am struggling now to master the shorter verse forms. Most of my poems tell stories, all are inspired by deep feelings on a very wide range of topics.
I have written four novels, so writing a narrative verse is a nice change for me. I love hearing from other writers and always try to respond when someone makes a comment. I enjoy reading others' works as much as I enjoy writing my own.
Fishing, furry creatures and football are among my greatest loves. I have no tolerance for bigotry and hatred. "Judge not lest ye be judged" is my favorite quote.
I have few fears, but sharks and alligators are among them. I also fear for the future of our world.

Dear Poets,
This had to be the hardest contest to judge -- every entry was wonderful and only a few were not in tanka form. In judging, I recruited the assistance of the Canadian photographer who took the photo - Alexa Brus. We spent hours discussing all of the poems and she agreed they all read like winners so some tough choices had to be made. Grammar and spelling were considered in the rankings, but Alexa and I were in total agreement on the first-place winners.
FYI- although my dictionary has "prism" as two syllables, the Soup syllable counter had it as one syllable so we accepted either count as correct.
John Freeman's poem too a unique perspective, comparing the fractured lights of the forest to the way an autistic boy might see them:
Billy's Autism by John Freeman Autistic blank gaze Graces the spaces of mind Rainbow's grace bestows Dark forest gives way to trees A smile colors blank spaces
Sara Kendrick was the only poet to correctly identify the lights as the effects of Aurora Borealis and created quite a beautiful image:
Refraction by Sara Kendrick Refracting morn's light Aurora Borealis Beauty touched spirit Sunrays pierce trees through forest
Moment captured forever Congratulations to all who entered the contest, especially those whose poems were selected as winners!
