Life is an infinite continuum, feeding on its own death. Our mortality, real and imagined, lives within. We can always see these truths with a discerning eye. The mirrored images that seem like two, are but one, a parallel universe whose paths cross like a wisp of wind, we are all of one time, like prose and poems written in separate centuries, but of the same struggle. There, always there, truth never hides, except for those who don’t seek it for fear of what they might find. From light to dark we fly in different directions though toward the same destination. What matters is what we do on our flight. Do we see the paths of leaves as they float on the pond, the reflection of the sky beyond, and the trees, who have now shed their leaves but will reflect full in the spring; beneath the leaves, the roots of the lily pads and the stare of a wary carp who looks from his world as we do from ours? We must find time on our journey to read, play a game, or simply sit and wonder at the marvels around us, for death will come in its own time…

Who do we write to?
Blog Posted:10/2/2013 1:16:00 PM

For whom do you write or do you not care?  Would you scribble words that tomorrow or some future time might make you smile or draw a sad or happy tear?  If everyone said all you wrote was not worthy of reading – would you still write?

For whom do you write, or like a diary, is what you write reminders of a time or day or collection of memories to keep for yourself?  Is approval  “all important” to us, and if it is, whose approval do we seek?  We all have poetically contributed toward a holiday or birthday or sympathy card or eulogy because that is our God given gift and if we can not share that in emotional times then …

For whom do we write?  Does it depend on our audience?  How many of you have cautiously shown poems to a friend or family member and gotten a polite response?  Poets are not normal people, that is, anyone that can step outside the box of the “Roses are red”!!  So how do we deal with it?

I came here two years ago this December thinking I knew something about poetry and like so many other things in life the more I learned about poetry the more I realized I never knew.  I have been so buoyed by that same growth from others here and that we all have grown in many ways with each other.  So who do I write to?----I guess we write to ourselves and each other…..and the occasional frustrated artist.  Personally I think it is a wonderful and beautiful family!

What honest responses---I must say If I hadn't found this site I would still have a drawer full of maybe 30+ poems written over 40+ years that hardly anyone would have ever seen---so thank you guys!! You're the best!

HI Craig: I started writing after I retired as a Registered Nurse. I had written the occasional poem but until the internet came along and I checked Poetry Forums I never realized what a study it is to explore. Now my life experience and word, or theme triggers can lead me anywhere. My reasons for writing are varied: I write as a way of discovery to my own spirit and to express my reaction to life. If someone can find inspiration from my words or observations, I am all the more enriched. (cont)

I write mostly on my own philosphy, dreams, mystical themes, the wonder and beauty of nature (spiders in particular) archeology discoveries, death, war, suicide and betrayal. I have tried different forms and read other poets and study . It has become a rel passion for me and I love the supportive atmoshphere and talent I find here at Poetry Soup.

I have been writing poetry for maybe ten years, but I have only recently shared them. I wrote for myself, as a way to express my feelings. I was always the shy type, so poetry helped me to express myself. I have never shared them with family for fear of embarrassment. I had no idea that I possessed any kind of poetic talent, until other people told me so! Now, I wish I had done this ten years earlier!

Hi Craig..Who do i write to?.Of course i ask this question so many times.Firstly I write to myself and for anyone who dares to see beyond my imperfection of verse..scribbles to find my heartbeat.I write for my soul..Somehow writing helps set my soul free.Somehow my subconscious finds its comfort through writing.Re what family members think..Some encourage me..Others sees it as a waste of time with no capital gain..but Who cares?Poetry is that sacred shine where I can find myself with or without anybody else.If no one reads it I'dstill write ,cause its somehow a release ,an escapism,my perfect world..Poetry is the air which breathes beneath my bones..giving my existence a sense of life.

I write to make grown ups smile, and to make them young at heart... Laughter or a happy groan makes me happy... My son doesn't get it... and he refuses to read them... But he is being honest... My Hubby indulges and even helps me write them and some times gives me ideas... My brother groans over them but encourages them... The people I write them for, like our UPS Guy, applaud me and are tickled pink that I wrote a poem with them in mind... The workers at McDonalds can't wait to read the next one I hand them each week... Dragon of course wants my attention. The Trolls love my stories... and they keep ME entertained... Of course I bounce all my new poems off you to get the first response.

Exactly Carol! I read a poem to my wife last week who supports, with reservations, my efforts and her response was "I hate that". Every day people don't like poetry and that's why we need each other because "will write poems for food" is probably not a lucrative occupation!

Hey Craig....I seldom have time to come to the blogs but saw your name and had to stop....I love what you said to Carrie by the way..so many gifted people here...real poets who can reach down inside people and touch..the things I wrote before I had the contest subjects were from painful places I think...locked away writing instead of talking....the silly things have been fun..its just always been my alone time...thanks Craig....

Donna, Thanks hon, isn't it all about that---the things that draw us out and make us laugh--even if it's a slightly painful one it is still a smile---I went to a wake last week and....well...by the time all was done we were celebrating her life---in a very good way and---never mind---thanks Donna XXOO

I write to be remembered, Craig...I write to express myself....I write because I need healing...I write because I'm compelled to...I write to connect with people.....I write so someone, somewhere will be touched. I can't HELP but write. Been doing it since I was young....Will do it till I die...My dream? To be a published author...to leave a legacy...In Beyonce's words..."I was here! I lived! I loved! I was here!!!" Lovely blog... :)

Eileen, you have arrived, you are here--whatever faults exist with sites like this are diminished by this sharing that we all can do here. If you think about it, more valuable than a publication that who knows "who" reads?

I taught the English literature for almost for than three decades. While in the job I had no time write. I simply taught all the forms of poetry, the writers, etc.etc. After my retirement I had the time to write what I taught. Firstly, I was judging myself and then I joined PS in 2005 and since then I just write, why, for whom, I don't know. I enjoy writing, writing about my sorrows happiness and whatever is happening around and receiving the responses of the fellow poets on soup. I have written some poems on PS and I am thinking to put in a blog today. Thanks , Craig for giving this chance for self introspection.

write for the muse! I've been on this poetry treadmill (as I call it) since I was 16...a medium once told me my poetry comes from the spirit world; as she eloquently put it "it's not when she wants to write, it's when we bleedin well give it to her" haha well I wish they'd give it to me a bit more often, I envy those poets here who can write on a daily basis...and sometimes it does feel as if certain poems are beamed into my mind; at other times it's a slog, so I wish they'd give me a bit more of a helping hand! lol but in all seriousness, I say always write for yourself first and foremost, "to thy own self be true", if others can relate to it and enjoy reading it then that's a bonus...

I started writing my poetry for me.. to try and fill my time and to release sadness from my losses. But now I think I am writing for approval from others to say what I think and unleash thoughts kept deep inside. The positive comments and support from the PS have done wonders for my confidence and my well being. For that I say thank you - BIG. I only put my poems here because I am not quite brave enough to open up to family and friends. Someday... Betty

Betty, I've seen you here since you started and you are a love. Like most of us we have problems baring our souls but this is a perfect venue to do so. Betty you have had some painful losses and releasing them through your writing can help, perhaps a little, to bring peace and even inspiration to others.

Like you, Craig, I came here thinking that a poem was just a poem...either a verse that rhymed perhaps, or just expressions of thought. It turned out to be so much more than that..I have learned so much since then! How little I knew, or how wonderful poetry could be.I have never pursued poetry for anything other than to enjoy, never for the pursuit of publishing, hardly ever sharing with the world that I am a poet. Somehow,I've always been gun-shy about "tooting my own horn" in fear that someone might roll their eyes behind my back.So this is pretty much the only place I show a poem.I do admit my greatest wish, however, that someday, perhaps after I'm gone...a grandchild or family member will discover a poem of mine, and say,"Wow....!" :) I would love to think so!

Carrie, You are the poet here that I most admire for your pure----how do I put this----"All American"---no, that isn't fair--it is more "All People"--"All Real"--no matter where you are from anywhere in the world! If there is anyone that is anymore selfless and sharing and more self effacing here----forget about it---to get back to the theme---please keep sharing your poems with us--because you are a true gift!
