Life is an infinite continuum, feeding on its own death. Our mortality, real and imagined, lives within. We can always see these truths with a discerning eye. The mirrored images that seem like two, are but one, a parallel universe whose paths cross like a wisp of wind, we are all of one time, like prose and poems written in separate centuries, but of the same struggle. There, always there, truth never hides, except for those who don’t seek it for fear of what they might find. From light to dark we fly in different directions though toward the same destination. What matters is what we do on our flight. Do we see the paths of leaves as they float on the pond, the reflection of the sky beyond, and the trees, who have now shed their leaves but will reflect full in the spring; beneath the leaves, the roots of the lily pads and the stare of a wary carp who looks from his world as we do from ours? We must find time on our journey to read, play a game, or simply sit and wonder at the marvels around us, for death will come in its own time…

Sapphic Stanza Winners
Blog Posted:9/27/2013 3:49:00 PM

Goodness!  What a ride—those of you who can’t hear the meter it’s okay, life goes on, there are hundreds of forms and there will be other days and I honor those that grasp the oriental forms like Haiku and I am in awe of your skills with free verse et al, but the wonder of poetry is exactly that, the freedom to choose what form inspires us and to celebrate those who, as Emeril would say “Kick it up a notch”.  So please celebrate my choices for better or worse in Sapphic Stanza.

First place is shared by a veteran meter guy and a meter maid rookie Georgio and Eileen!!

Second place is shared by two other meter veterans and another rookie Isaiah, Andrea, and Becca!

Third place is shared by Carrie, Nancy, and Jack!

Fouth by Olusegun and Reason

Fifth by Elaine and Sandra

Sixth by TBA

And two HM’s Russell and Nette

Thanks to all who tried this very difficult form.

What is Carrie saying down here, that meter does not come easy for her? Gosh, I have read very well metered sonnets and other poems from her!! Good on Carrie for top three, and thanks for my placement too, Craig. That Sapphic stanza has a very difficult meter. I think with practice it would come much easier to me. Truly it just takes doing a form again and again and soon it is like second nature.I have seen this happen to many poets at Soup that have been practicing sonnets! How cool Eileen got first place. CAn't wait to see hers if I didn't already!!

Craig...if I were to search high and low....I would NEVER be able to find the words to thank you. You have NO idea what this means to me....I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart for challenging me, for believing in me, for encouraging me...There is yet beauty in this world. Thank you! Congrats to all the other winners...this was a very difficult form to work with....
