Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent nearly a decade now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines and for the website Shadow Poetry, and also, entering poetry contests herself.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems have appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry is published in eight chapbooks (the most recent one soon to be published is called Prosies), which can be purchased at

Such a Fine Line (when judging)

Blog Posted:8/8/2013 3:51:00 PM
Just wondering, you guys who are judges from time to time, is the process very difficult for you sometimes? My latest contest on night themes was quite a challenge for me. I have ended up with 18 winners. I feel that I may have hurt some people by being too critical, but I just can't be true to myself if I put up a winners' list with poems that have mistakes in them , no matter how pretty they are. (If you are one of these people, please soupmail me if you want to know why I did not place your poem.)

Some of my reasons for not placing a poem were simply based on whether the poems followed my rules. I decided to be very strict on that. If a person said "free verse" but wrote rhyme, I did not place it. If a person did not use the title that they were supposed to use, I did not place it, etc, etc.

I want everyone in my last contest who tried very hard to create a good poem for me to know that if you did not get on my winners list, be assured there were others of whom I was equally critical. Sometimes in the past I have placed poems that I really did not think were up to par with what should be on a winners' list from my own perspective. This time I decided to be more selective,  and yes, I know every judge is different. It's very subjective, so please keep that in mind with all of us judges who are trying to do our best. I am looking for more than just the message and the feeling, and many of you here are giving me poems with great feeling and ideas. I am also looking at things like grammar, spelling, etc. I tried to be as fair as possible, and it took me two to three hours of going back and forth with the entries. Now they are waiting to have the numbers placed on them and I will get back to doing that later!

Thanks so much to everyone who supported my contest. Some of the ones not placed got onto my short list and I really enjoyed them; just wanted you to know that!

Andrea, I too have a hard time judging and worrying about hurting someone's feelings. I try to be strict and eliminate the ones who didn't follow the rules, even it it's just a minor detail. My last contest a certain form was requested and it had a strict syllable count. There were at least three beautiful poems I would have loved to place, but the syllable count was off by 1 on one of their lines. I tell myself that it's a contest and every rule must be followed to the letter, but I still feel bad about not placing some.

I think that is the way all the contests should be judged, Andrea. I respect the right of judges to be strict. I have often messed up, missed reading the details of the rules....and I can chastise myself for being careless.....but it wouldn't be fair of me to chastise the judge for not allowing my mistake to supersede someone else's poem, especially if it pushes someone else out of the running. Fair is fair...I respect your judgment.

I get so mad at myself when I mess up with rules!! That's the worst, when you do it to yourself. haha!!

AD, that's why you're a fair judge, because you beat yourself up trying to be fair and I never once, if I didn't finish in your contest, thought that I wasn't given consideration that was unfair. Like you I usually like to judge blind because we do have friends that we would hesitate to exclude but, anyhow, this blog says miles about you being a fair judge-----now make sure I win your next contest!!!----Just kidding!! Hugs

thanks for the kind words, Craig. Except for a few people whose style is usually unmistakable to me, I have no idea whose poetry I have put through to the winners circle. I feel that some judges may be basing decisions on biases and that's why I am against using names. Well, I sure have felt that way in their contests. Some judges that require names are not biased at all, and I appreciate that.
