America's first settlers resorted to cannibalism

Blog Posted:5/3/2013 10:58:00 PM

Historians reveal hard evidence that America's first settlers resorted to cannibalism to survive the harsh winter. Julie Noce reports:

http://za.news.yahoo.com/video/jamestown-settlers-resorted-cannibalism-072422538.html

When we were young, we were discouraged to discuss topics such as sex, politics and religion at the dinner table. I wonder what the topic of conversation was at the above mentioned dinner table...

There are only a few days left before the closing of the ROUNDEL - Paradise Lost - Contest. I know it is not an easy form or topic, but I am sure you are up to it. I am extending the closing date till 11 May to give you more time.

HAPPY QUILLS!

Jamestown was not the first settlers in America, not even the first English settlement. That they had to resort to cannibalism in a land of plenty shows how stupid and unprepared they were. How can you starve in a grocery store - no can opener.

Here's something weird for you...my wife has asked me on several occasions...would you eat me if you had to? I always say no, I would starve to death before I'd eat you. Her response is always the same. She says she'd eat me in a heartbeat...almost like she wants to eat me...I'm sure I'd be tasty, but c'mon...should I be worried?

su, to answer your comment at the bottom here,I DID go without food for a week at one time in my life. It was one week in the summer of '74. Before leaving to go back to the US after having gained ten unwanted pounds in my study abroad in Spain, I lost the weight and went home in the same shape as when I'd arrived! Scientists say we can live a month without food if we absolutely had to. It's water we absolutely need. I know myself. I truly think I would let myself perish before I would consume human flesh. Also, I can't even keep down normal foods I hate! I saw a movie about guys who ate their fellow dead of a plane crash to survive . I don't blame them but I think I could not do it!

Andrea, I am sure that you are answering Richard.... Like you, I think it would be nearly impossible for me to cross that barrier.

Sorry I never tried your contest, Su. There are more than a few I have not had the time to research lately. I'm busier than usual these days and just doing the contests simpler for me. good luck getting more entries.

I am sorry to hear that you will not have the time to enter the contest, Andrea. Thank you for the kind note left on my poem, Typewriter. Love, Su

I had not heard of that. I only knew that the entire party of about 104 people had been reduced to only 50 by the time they had arrived from across the ocean. They were so pious, I find it incredible that they would have resorted to cannibalism. Have you heard of the Donner Party? They became cannibals in the 1800's during a severe storm on their way to CAlifornia.

Go without food for a week Andrea, see if it still seems so incredible. You'll be ready to eat our neighbour lol. The human desire to live knows no bounds. Yes I've read about the Donnor's, the tree stumps are still there to indicate the depth of the snow. They were trapped there for months.

No, this is all new to me. I will read up on it. I like history - good or "bad".
