Cyndi MacMillan is a well-rounded writer who embraces many genres and forms. Her work has been published in local newspapers and has won contests. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing publication within their glossy covers.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a good forum which enables people from around the world to share poetry. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for friends to meet.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

NEW CONTEST, HO HEY: WRITE ME A PUB SONG

Blog Posted:4/11/2013 8:33:00 PM

In a former life, I loved murdering pub songs. Raising your voice with others, gives one a feeling of solidarity, unless you're booed, of course (hee hee). Currently, the Lumineers have a song on the radio called Ho Hey And I LOVE it.

Here are a few examples of my favourite pub songs...

Barrett’s Privateers (excerpt)
By Stan Rogers

Oh, the year was 1778, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
A letter of marque came from the king,
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen,

REFRAIN:
God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Black Velvet Band (excerpt)
Traditional

Well, in a neat little town they call Belfast, apprentice to trade I was bound
Many an hours sweet happiness, have I spent in that neat little town
A sad misfortune came over me, which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and relations, betrayed by the black velvet band

REFRAIN:
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band.

Wild Rover
(Traditional, excerpt)

I've been a wild rover for many's the year
I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer
But now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more

REFRAIN::
And it's No, Nay, never,
No, nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more

Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond
(Traditional, excerpt)

By yon bonnie banks,
And by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love
Were ever want to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

REFRAIN:
Oh! ye'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love
Will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

So your challenge:

write me a pub song

A FEW RULES

1) A refrain is mandatory. Make it catchy.
2) Must have at least 3 stanzas not including the refrain.
3) Must be new for this contest

AND SOME LOOSE GUIDELINES

1) The poem should either tell a story or be inspiring/confessional/humorous

2) Pile on the emotion. I don’t know a single pub song that is not emotional. Stir the senses. Make it passionate, funny, romantic or sad, you choose, BUT it must evoke feelings – if you’re telling a story of lost love, I wanna weep. If you’re being bawdy, then I’d better snort!  If it is a tale of lost love, make us all sigh. Sea shanty, working man’s song, whatever it is, target the heart!

3) I’ll leave the format up to you, but keep it lyric based. What I mean is that most songs have some rhyme/slant rhyme and a near consistent syllable count.

4) Can have either a traditional feel or something a bit more mod.

5) If another pub song inspired your write, fill me in underneath your poem.

My poem, Take me to the Pub, is another paltry example.

So have fun, let loose, dig deep and sing us a song! Roll up your sleeves or down a pint, whatever gets you into the spirit of this. But let another drive you home ?

Can’t wait to see what you send me.

CHEERS!

AND RAISE THE ROOF, MATES!
