About Cyndi MacMillan

Bloggers Photo

Cyndi MacMillan is a well-rounded writer who embraces many genres and forms. Her work has been published in local newspapers and has won contests. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing publication within their glossy covers. Her work will appear in the forthcoming issue of the Fieldstone Review, Spring 2015.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a good forum which enables people from around the world to share poetry. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for friends to meet.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

SOUPERS, PLEASE READ. AN IDEA I SENT TO TPS. WATCHA THINK? WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THIS, TOO?

Blog Posted:3/27/2013 4:53:00 PM
Hey all,

I sent this idea to Team Poetry Soup. What do you think?

___________________

Dear Team Poetry Soup,

I have an idea.

The contest page is awesome, but there are times when members may wish to host an anthology/collection page instead of a contest.

I think of recent global events. It would be nice to have a dedicated area for Soupers to gather their tribute, memorial and inspirational poetry, an area separate from the contest pages.

When the tragedy occurred at Sandy Hook I had wanted to invite Soupers to submit their poems for a vigil page, but I  could not, because I already had a contest running, and even if I hadn’t, I did not want to use this terrible event as a contest theme.

There are times when a member may wish to provide a space to feature a relevant theme, but does not want to judge. Sometimes, it would seem pertinent to gather as poets and just share our writing, as a balm and outlet.

I am thinking of ...

1) International events/the global consciousness. Poems written by Soupers around a theme.

- The 9/11 Anniversary / Holocaust Remembrance Day/ World Peace Day (etc)
- Natural disasters
- Tragedies
- Recognition and empathy to crisis/duress/epidemics/unbearable conditions

2) This feature being used as a way to support/inspire other Soupers during times of hardship as well as times of celebration. Poems written by Soupers FOR Soupers.

- Bereavement
- Birthdays
- Caregiving
- Engagements/weddings
- Illness
- Publication
- Recovery
- Surgery

3) And I see a third ability for this page. Members could use this function as a tutorial/ editing space, a writer’s group who are seeking verse improvement. There have been a few poets on soup who have attempted this on blogs, but they could simply paste the collection into a blog, keep the poet grouping.

I see this as looking similar to the contest administration page, but a simpler format (perhaps you could use it as a template?) No need for judging, but the winners list could be altered to include a drop down window with three categories to choose from: 1) friend  2) participant  3) contributor

Ideally, the member could select less than 35 (especially in the case of a writers group) and be able to close the collection at their choosing (not one month or longer)

Now, I am just waxing on with an idea.

If impossible or just too time consuming (? Maybe there is a problem here I am not seeing, a way to abuse something which is meant only as an act of kindness?) then I understand it’s a no go, ever.

In this case, could we simply add friend, participant, and contributor to the winner's drop down list?

What do you think? Too ambitious?

Thank you,
Cyndi

I love the idea but have doubts about TPS ability or commitment to provide effectively functioning venues for this.

It's a fantastic idea, Brain-Cyndi!! I'm a little confused with the point #3 but I'll get it sooner or later. LOL! I say: YES! : ) Let's see what our Big Brother (TPS) think about it.

LOL read from down to up. Yes, lets see what TPS says. It looks so work-heavy!

Lastly, the class name could change to ENJAMBMENT CLASS/Edited works. By retaining all the versions other poets could scope through this section and actually see the poems developement. Why this word was used here, that line added, that subtracted...

Some of our dyno free versers would not do this, but can you imagine if they did? A free verse clinic? So many poets here shy from free verse, don't see the poetry in the form, ID it as ruleless, lawless, dribbling lines. But to help them create one out of a piece of creative writing, maybe they'd warm up to it(?) ;)

the coolest way to do this would be to have people leave their first poem intact and edit "versions" below. This would show how the poems changed, hopefully, lol, improved. I'm not sure how many people would use this feature this way, but it would be nice to see.

You know how PD and I and some other judges copy and paste the winners list into a blog? Well, the tutor could copy/paste the ENJAMBMENT CLASS into a blog, like a quick link for the students/readers. So some tips are shared, and the ten could click on each others pos, help each other out, give advice

:) Remember when Debbie had a meter tutorial? She ran a contest that really wasn't a contest. So, say someone wanted to ... hmm... teach about enjambment. Title of anthology ENJAMBMENT CLASS, POEMS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Say, 10 poets want this. They enter the 'class' the classroom door is shut (anthology closed)
