Blog Posted:3/21/2013 7:48:00 PM

I want to help TPS to create

the "Form Moderator"

but I think that Im going to need

your asistance, Soupers.

So, if something is missing,

just add it here as a comment.

Im going to start with one of the short forms:

Haiku (or Senryu).

Haiku is a micropoem,

 originating in seventeenth century Japan,

with characteristic of brebity, seasonal

and nature references,

which, when well handled,

has a singular grace and power...

UT OH lol you know me dear Mr. O I feel the concept of haiku came from a desire to focus our earthly bodies on the sacred, and from a Shinto & buddist tradition of God/God's in nature so I'm afraid as charming as this presentation is and it is true in a lot of ways, I think for me I wish to have haiku as a form of meditation so I do not think the form is any more funny that I would dare to think the Bible is funny UNLESS I was being irreverent..UT OH you did ask me to weigh in ;)

Ruben for me haiku is like any other form of poetry that has a history, it is generically Japanese but it has to evolve through generations yet still retain something of the original form, as we all know it was originally written in one line on a scroll with very strict rules as is/was Japanese culture, but I liken it to Rugby, we (England) invented the game but other countries have adopted the game and changed the rules/ kit/ pitch size/ size of goal posts etc, but the ball still remains the same shape...hope that makes sense

That is how I feel at times Ruben> Check out my poems: The Caged Bird Sings; and Bowls. I only post a few poems on PS - the rest I share on my personal fb and on my website. I have read a few honest poems from "local" poets which are hard hitting - some where highlighted when they joined.....

Have you read Neruda's "I'm Explaining a Few Thing" Let me share its last lines with you (Suzette): "And you'll ask: why doesn't his poetry/speak of dreams and leaves/and the great volcanoes of his native land?/Come and see the blood in the streets./Come and see/The blood in the streets./ Come and see the blood/In the streets!"

That brings me to: What is poetry and the A Ha! moment? I once saw a Rolls Royce in Cape Town, sporting a bumper sticker of all things! "F.... the poor" it said. Now to me that is pure poetry in motion... ;-) It may be said to be the motto of most politicians today. This is what I feel about pretentious words which are held up as poetry. I (and many others here ) write about the hungry kid in the gutter and that does NOT make me 3rd world - it makes me AWARE. So, haiku is not my choice of poetry.. . :-(

Ha ha! Yes, online activity can be a frightening thing, eh(btw - when I use the term: Jesus-Zombies, I am referring to a specific type of weirdo-freak Christian. I think Jesus is a really cool dude; sort of like a Middle Eastern John Lennon -- a true humanist and social activist.

Hey, Ruben(Hullo, Su), I have to stand up for myself on this one. I write about stars, birds, flowers, etc, but I have written a lot of poems involving such topics as hunger, poverty, genocide, tyranny, prostitution, social/religious conditioning, racism, wanton destruction, alienation, and the alienating affects of mechanization and digitalization, the sociopathic fissures induced by online dissociative behaviour, class-wars, the "pusher" mentality of corporatism and advertising....
    O. Avatar Ruben O. Date: 3/22/2013 12:42:00 AM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

No, I dont think that many poets write about the hungry here in PS. They talk endlessly about the moon, the stars, the ocean, the clouds, the bird, the flower, Jesus will save me, Jesus loves me, the rose, the solitude, etc ... but about hungry people? Nope, Im not seeing those poems.
  1. Date: 3/21/2013 11:19:00 PM
    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Kudos Ruben. THE BEST EVER description of haiku. Many a true word spoken in jest and put like this, I would not think that a detailed description of haiku is ever going to be needed by anyone else ever again. TPS could put the link to this blog on the FORMS page. You forgot about the capital letters and the punctuation and the "white space" between words (......). Oh! And don't slam the door on your way out..... leave it ajar....hihihi (that is Japanese for: hiehiehie - due to the ON) Have a nice day. Love, Su {PS Only Linda, and by that I mean: ONLY Linda< may use haikus... as in couscous .... ;-) }

Now now, Ruben O. We will be sent to Japan to go and study the form and not to come back until we Understand haiku. I loved the one quote (attributed to Basho): A good haiku is when 80% is clear, but a haiku that is only 50% clear, is excellent....
    O. Avatar Ruben O. Date: 3/21/2013 11:45:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

... BUT ... now that I think about the Haiku's rules and the "form moderator" ... if TPS install these specific rules as operating instructions (a software) to decode if a poem is or not a haiku ... Aha' ... even a iambic-pentameter sonnet would fall into this category! : D

Oh, I almost forgot: The seasons are: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter AND New Year! :-) You forgot the "A ha!" Moment in your description (as mentioned by Charles H). Explaining haiku to someone is like telling a joke to a blond. She will laugh 3 time: 1. When she is told the joke, 2. When you explain the joke, and 3. When she gets it. By then I regret having spoken ;-)

At one time on "ahapoetry.com" Jane had a list of some 100 "rules" that have come and gone over the years. There are probably many more that the preponderence of writers adhere to today, but those are constantly being dropped and/or revised, evolving daily into something different. If one finds a way around a "rule" and the intent of the haiku shines through, then that rule is not necessary for that particular haiku.

hi Ruben, Was waiting to see how this blog would fly before I jumped in, that's all. It is very easy to write about things that are obviously wrong with haiku, but I can tell you from experience that it is far more intellectual, personable, and polite to suggest things that are right with haiku. One can learn far more by reading the known leaders in haiku, who usually are the ones who write the books. I suggest Michael Dylan Welch, Higginson, Harold Henderson, Jane Rheichold (aha poetry) and very few others. One should, I think, get a feeling of the old traditional feel and form before embarking into modern (subjective) haiku. However, I find the latter is more rewarding, personally.

A rule may apply in one instance or for one particular occasion or person. So, I have stopped giving rules. I am glad to give suggestion however, and will to anyone who points a haiku my way.

It's nice to see you here, Charles! I was thinking about you while I was writing this blog. I mixed the traditional and the contemporary's "rules" ... just to avoid any kind of conflict! LOL! Any rule to add?

"Natalie Goldberg talks about haiku at one point, about how, when you read a lot of it, you start to see that there is a leap in it; “a moment when the poet makes a large jump and the reader’s mind must catch up. This creates a little sensation of space in the reader’s mind, which is nothing less than a moment’s experience of God, and when you feel it, there is usually an ‘Ahh’ wanting to issue from your lips.” This I want in the definition. Hey, Soup, this to me is haiku!

Cyndi walks onto the stage, almost trips on her gown, trys not to look like an idiot as she tugs at her bodice. "The envelope please," she says. A smile lights her face. "And the winner for this week's best blog goes to....RUBEN." She grins. "Ruben! Hello? Oh, stop being shy. What? Oh, he's in the john. Seems he had a shart. Oh, wait, dammit it so have I. Crap. I mean, really, crap. So much for my Valentino. Clean up on Aisle one!" Heeheee hee heee.... Hey, seriously, when I was researching haiku, I read a cool fact. Did you know that for a real haiku experience we are only supposed to read one haiku a day? Only one... so it can slowly become a part of us. Neat, huh? Hugs, Cyndi

You're so funny! "on aisle one?" I didnt know about reading just one haiku per day ... That may be what people use to do after reading one of my haiku: they dont want to read another one for the rest of the day (day, week, year ... is all the same!). : D Hugs.
