Gwendolen R.'s Blog
Greetings fellow Soupers! For most of you who don’t know me, my name is Gwendolen. I have been enjoying this website since February 2011. Really, I am just a big kid at heart who enjoys a vast array of poetry ranging from Shel Silverstein, Ken Nesbit, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, to Jewel. As a matter of fact, my father told me when I was in fourth grade that he even named me after his favorite African American poet, Pulitzer Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks. This news meant little to me at the time, but when I shared it with my class during show and tell, my teacher was quite impressed. (Apparently she liked Brook’s poetry too, as she read one of her poems aloud the next day. Imagine how red my face was?!!) If Mrs. Goolsby thought poetry was cool, then it must have been true because she had a glass eye, and everyone thought it was the neatest trick when she took it out to clean it during the day. From that day forward poetry was cool, I was cool, and a little poetry spark grew inside me!
Much of the poetry I write has to do with personal experiences in my everyday life. For example, meet the new neighbor who visits my yard daily. I haven’t given this rascal a name yet, but just to be nice, I wrote a poem about her called, The Polite Ground Hog. Writing a poem was the nicest gesture I could do after this “little princess” ate my cucumber plants. (Yes, this is sarcasm!) Peace to you guys! You are the best! Thanks for your encouragement and your friendship.

Hi Soupers! Please excuse the tardiness of posting the winners from my latest contest. I printed the entries a few weeks ago and have been reading and rereading some of the best entries EVER submitted in one of my poetry contests. What I was looking for in a winning entry was EMOTION--no matter where a poet stood on the gun issue. Please take the time to read through each and every entry. I don't believe I have enjoyed judging a contest MORE than this one. Hats off to everyone who put his or her pens to work expressing their first amendment right regarding the great gun debate.
GREAT WORK, POETS!
Your friend,
Gwendolen
