WHAT'S YOUR APPROACH
Blog Posted:1/23/2013 11:35:00 AM

When do we know, when we're poets? Does the title come after you've written a decent poem or two, you deem yourself, or some critically acclaimed award? Is it about the language, or studying the art? When I write, I throw all of those things to the wind and just write. I never felt that I was a poet, just a writer attempting to get some kind of emotion from the reader (good or bad). Edutainment with a twist on the outlook, or truths viewed in different lighting and darkness. After all it's life at its best. How do you approach writes, before bestowing the gift?

Please excuse the french everyone ...I remember being a boy(11) and saying to myself - fuck everyone else and all their rules, I'm going to write poetry exactly the way I want to. Poetry makes no demand on the poet except to say..don't lie to me.

lol...yeah, got a bit excited there didn't I. Truly though, if you want to know what hell feels like cheat your muse. She only asks we provide her with the truth as it stands, no more. It's all about the rhythm mate.

I do not sit and think, I just sit down when I feel comfortable about a subject and the words flow, as though written by others. I sometimes amaze myself with what I have written never ever can remember what I had written, have to read it as though for first time. Guess its my inner self showing the real me......Seren

Well Scribe...I do nothing much but write poems everyday. Some are good, some are bad.But that's all I do..And what is it that poets do? They write poetry...I approach my writes with a story to tell, some may like them, some may not.But it's all I have to do in life....I do believe you are a poet. You have some mighty fine writes, with alot of meaning.Though sometimes I get a sence that you are searching to hard for a write?Like you don't want to write anything unless it has a true mind changing meaning?I don't mean this in a bad way or anything! You need to just let it flow!~~~~ Your a great writer! :o)

Dan you have swagger. I'm jealous just a little, you just get to write : ) I respect your input! I write what boggles my mind or a different view for the reader. Simplicity with a twist. Its a real world that I ingest and digest. Thanks for the compliment and I admire your pen!

For some ,the poet is 'the voice of inspiration'..For others ,the poet is that persona who lives to write by the rule...I can't really define the poet.. I do try to follow forms and study its art but usually the best poems I write are not the ones which i planned to rule and form but those im inspired to write there and then..they seem to reach for soul.BY THE WAY..GREAT BLOG AND FUNNY AVATAR ;0

I have problems with the ones I plan also. I've come to the conclusion, to just let the muse write, while I read. I'm my worse critic; i don't have a poem that I wrote, that I'm in love with. One day I hope to achieve personal satisfaction!
  1. Date: 1/24/2013 8:18:00 AM
I believe I am a poet because I write poems. If I write good poems, then I am a good poet. If other people read them and connect, then I feel I may even be a decent poet. Poets search for recognition, but the best always comes from yourself (not ego but satisfaction) To me, a good poem works both written and oral. All poems have a shape, the dark ink on the white page; form, and resonnance.

One other point Marlon as poetry is an oral art form, all good poetry is written to be read aloud. This is probably the best test for any poet to deploy thereby to distinguish it from 'shredded prose'. Notwithstanding, the latter may still have some creative validity, as long as the poet labels it so.Rgds Brian

Vocally we put emphasis on the words, which I believe dictate their emotions and imagery. They get the feel the poets point of view! Your wisdom is appreciated Sharon and Brian!
Strand Avatar Brian Strand Date: 1/24/2013 7:28:00 AM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

A shape or concrete poem is of course mixing two art forms in one and so the disciplines of both will apply. From a poetry viewpoint the shape poem still needs to be poetic, otherwise it's just shredded prose.Rgds Brian
Bell Avatar Sharon Bell Date: 1/24/2013 5:21:00 AM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

Unless it's a concrete or shape poem, eh? I suppose it does still need a certain amount of meter, but you can't appreciate either of these forms unless you can see the poem written out.

Real interesting Scribe! I've always classified myself as a writer chasing that elusive freedom of being a poet - being unafraid and completely free, not tied down by social sensibilities and absurd validations.

Dear Marlon: I am the maker of anything.... and there for, I take my creative mind into the caves of wonder. There and only there, you will find a 12-year-old girl who sits down to write poems in the comfort of her pencil with no eraser against the canvas wall. LOL..

..I'm gonna make this plain and simple & long LOL... I'm only the illusion of my pen. My pen is the 7 wonders of me ;-) ;-) ;-) ... I am the author of all the keys and characters in my free falling writes. Never have I called myself a poet... However I do call what I write POEMS. I will call others here poets out of respect. The first poem I posted on the Poet Destroyer Account. is called "WORDS"... lol... get it we are nothing but words. You and I and Ink and more. We play we write, and were good thinkers. It takes a mighty pen to lay it all down on paper. And yet I wonder ????? Poetry is only the near illusion of what I do to protect my identity. Maybe I am maybe I'm not.. But, Ill tell you what... My mind is all the art I will ever need. I can draw and paint with all the colors in my mind... LOL... try me out. and you will see. I form, and I de-form all forms of forms... Love the Poet Destroyer....

A poet is someone who not only has approachable content in his/her verse but has a perfection of his/her craft at the minimum, who knows their own weaknesses and adjusts for them with all of the many devices available, such as dictionaries, thesauruses’, encyclopedias and spell check. A poet values writing as an art form. Any thing else and anyone else is just dabbling, playing.

I have some work to do Debbie! I'm dealing with content as we speak. l looked back on my year here, and i wasn't impressed, because I know I can write with a little more intensity! @ Charles I got you. Both of you are right!

Henderson Avatar Charles Henderson Date: 1/23/2013 11:10:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

But, the reason we keep trying is the quest for perfection. We know we will never get there.
ML Avatar SCRIBE ML Date: 1/23/2013 8:03:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

I agree with your comment, but the perfection part is questionable. I think if we perfect something there's nothing left to work on! Thanks Debbie!
  1. Date: 1/23/2013 3:51:00 PM
Yes Marlon you become a poet when you write a 'poem'.(Formerly) if you author 'a work of literary art'.So that leads us to what is a 'poem'.Here we start to have problems asto what subjectively is a poem.Form etc or lack of one then comes into the equation. At the lowest level I guess a poem is something that is hamonious and satisfying to the author thereof. If that happens then I'm sure there is likely to be at least one other person(peer poets hopefully) who also finds it harmonious.Good question.Rgds Brian

I usually shy away from calling myself a poet. Other people bestow that title upon me after they read my work. I feel the minute I start calling myself a "Poet" then I am no longer the humble person I want to be and then am in fear of the ugly monster "Ego" taking over. As far my own approach to writing poetry; like the Holy Spirit it comes to me in many ways. My two most frequent are spur of the moment feelings or I come up with a theme or line that gets stuck in my head and then I build around it. I'm curious Scribe are you a domino player? Dominoes is my favorite pasttime.

My opinion, you are a poet! Matter of fact, we share thoughts about the word poet; that's why I put scribe as a nickname. You have an interesting approach to the art and a inspiration to any who dare to read!...Dominoes, did I hear you say that....I'll whoop you any day, even onSundays and Holidays Mr. Smith lol

I know what you mean. Did feel like I'd hit a mile stone a couple of days ago, when I randomly googled myself and found someone on wiki answers asking about one of my poems (they were actually asking if it was written by Sharon Bell Mathis, which made me feel somewhat proud that they could mistake my work for hers) I really felt like a proper poet then!

Marlon, so many times in history greatness was left in dust unappreciated in it's time and I think more too often lauded for the wrong reasons or because of a fad and what was hip. Personally, what's in your heart and how you paint it or write it and how it makes you happy is what rules---the rest is wind under wings you already have.
