A German guy wrote on this last week to an English newspaper on this topic Su.He observed that English children have the difficulty of how to spell a word they hear, whereas foreigners have the problem of how to pronounce the words they see.(especially those with double 'o' eg mood, flood, good etc. This is without considering your no 9 example where 'dove' is a North American dialect variation of the English word 'dived').Notwithstanding my native English language remains a great vehicle for poetry around the world as PS demonstrates here every day.Rgards Brian

I find now words almost daily which inspire me here on soup. Regarding pronouncing words: The Yorkshire accent had me baffled the first time I had heard my in-laws (now "ex") speak.... Many misunderstandings later, I resolved the issue by listening to the cadence of their speech, in stead of the actual words. ;-)

YES! Have 2 seconds! When you have young children you REALLY see this. Hugs,

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? We ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

And why is it that bakers bake, but grocers don't groce? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?
