I have been a member of Poetry soup since 2011.

Though my forte is fiction, verse has always appealed to me. There is nothing like a play of words to rattle the ordinary, to tickle away the dust of stagnation. My favourite form is the contemporary sonnet, but I also enjoy free verse. Also, I love the zen experience of haiku, its seizure of a moment, how it can hold a universe in so few syllables. And I admit to a fondness for the Rondeau.

My life is simple, but busy. I’m a writer and stay at home mother. Days are full.

Currently, I am working on a novel or ... ha ha... should I really say that the novel is working on me? Characters! They have a way of turning a world upside down.

There are some amazing poets on the soup. I am blessed to call many my friends ~~ Cyndi

THE SOUP NEWSLETTER- Dec 1 2012- Theme: SHORT POETRY

Blog Posted:11/30/2012 10:31:00 PM

One merit of poetry few persons will deny:

it says more and in fewer words than prose.

                                                  ~Voltaire~

There are artists who paint micro art. Their art that can fit into the eye of a needle.

I am just as dazzled by poets who can create a universe in less than 14 lines. Sonnets are a challenge for me because they are so SHORT. As someone who writes fiction, I struggle to capture everything I want in so few lines.

The very short poem must be highly selective with its words. Each phrase must paint a picture so vivid that the reader is held spellbound.

The following two poets kept me right there and I would like to learn to do what they have done. These scribes know how to etch a galaxy on a pinhead. ART!

Solitude

By Shanda Adams

Down in the hollow a lone owl cries

A star burns up across the skies

Crackling fire the only sound

No other soul for miles around

As planets escort full moon light

across its passage through the night

No winter’s chill in fire’s glow

One heart alone itself to know

unseeing eyes

by Aleck Paulino

In numbness I bask

Stripped of joy, stripped of agony

A vessel that’s hollow

Life’s curse, life’s sweet irony

The gods I ask

Cruel, unrelenting

Shunned with silence

Dejected, spiting

The sun sets

Glaring, mocking

Shadows are cast

The world is dying

So, how are YOU? What's up? Feeling fine? Feeling down?

Share, just stare, let someone know you care, play truth or dare... but

Keep things friendly, please. This is a place to put up your feet :)

Love to all,

Cyndi

TROMPE L'OEIL / Illusionism, most commonly in painting, but also in some sculpture, etc., intended to "fool the eye." A type of painting which, through various naturalistic devices, creates the illusion that the objects depicted are actually there in front of us. // How cool would it be if we could write in such a way?

I feel a challenge coming on. I may DREAM about this tonight. Surely there is a way to shadow fantasy and reality so that the two are separate yet eventually merge.... hmmm... maybe a new form? The Trompe L'oeil... oh, I want to play with this XOX Dee

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Hard to believe the holiday season is upon us. Where did the year go? It's been a week of mixed emotions. Thanksgiving day found out I was going to become a grandma. Great news but my son (the father) is deploying to Afghanistan on Dec 2 and will be gone 9 months. He'll miss the enitre pregnancy and birth. The day after Thanksgiving we moved my mom-in-law to an assisted living facility (she has dementia). It's a very nice place but it was sad knowing she had to be there. Then yesterday I got to spend the day with my 2 1/2 yr old grdaughter. Took her to the park and had a wonderful day! Guess I should have plenty to write about!

those were some good "itty bitties" as I like to call them. I love that kind. I also love limericks, triolet, epigrams, haiku, tanka, all those awesome little forms that force us to put our thoughts into interesting forms. Before I began my focus on sonnets in 2001, I had spent my first year as a "poet" writing these long rhymes about my life. I must have bored my family to death. I am sure I still bore them when I send them many of my poems in newsletters for each season, but at least now they can pick and choose among the forms I send them. Writing in forms requires discipline. Maybe not everyone feels like me, but I prefer poetry that has some thought as well as soul put into it!
