I started writing poetry as a young boy, actually they were lyrics to melodies I would invent, performed before the captive audience of Mom and Dad, who were, at least outwardly entertained.  Let’s face it, if you can’t please a loving family it’s probably not a good idea to take your show on the road.  I started writing poems in high school for English and Lit. classes and through college, some for courses, some for loves, and some---just because.  Sold some lyrics for ads and had some writings published.  Then life struck—marriage, family, work, and I didn’t write another poem for years, well, maybe a few.  Then just over a year ago I was searching for inspiration for a eulogy because a friend’s Dad had died and my search lead me to Poetry Soup and the fine poets who reside here.  I have learned more here than in all of my English and Literature classes combined.  I can think of many names that have been particularly inspirational but truly it is the whole—this creative melting pot…Poetry Soup---Thank You

One of my favorite movie quotes came from the 1994 version of "The Miracle on 34TH Street"
Mr Gimbel said "These small seemingly insignificant sentimental anachronisms...." Referring to Santa Claus.  How true, and the operative word is "seemingly".  We all too quickly these days try to crown ourselves with enlightenment like we will save the world from this devil Santa and the materialistic scourge on morality and sensibilities, but they are "seemingly insignificant" only to the naive and are certainly not anachronisms because if not by one name they will live in another, and have for centuries.  We are much too fragile to rid ourselves of them because despite our best efforts or self aggrandizement we are no better and perhaps in someways less enlightened.  The first 'Miracle on 34th Street' was 1947, the Virginia article was written in 1897 and similar thoughts and philosophies have been written for centuries and imagined before language existed.  So piling on, here are some of my materialistic memories of Christmas in the form of a Christmas tree!

Funny thing is--you could probably buy all of these for what an Ipad costs--simpler times!

One of my ploys of putting up the Santa blogs, was the hope that the Santa freaks would come out of the woodwork and show their hand....this way, people could connect them into a common denominator haha! My plan exceeded my greatest expectations. Seriously, I agree with the part were you touch upon enlightenment -- the conundrum is, the more knowledge we have at our disposal, the less enlightened we may become on certain levels. As a boy, I loved opening presents around the Christmas tree. Wot child doesn't?

I agree Chris, I think that today we have more knowledge available but much like TV or radio stations more doesn't always mean better and easier lends itself to lazy--yours is not one of those lazy minds--like my wife says to me, you may be many things, but boring isn't one of them! LOL

LOL Guys especially, remember the electric football game that would vibrate and the pieces would move--usually in the wrong direction and fall over--and the football was a piece of cotton that would fall out--what a disappointment it was!!

LOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS! Sea Monkeys had me laughing so hard! We had a hard time finding the "Hungry Hippos" game for our daughter at a good price. We finally caved and bought it full price. It is a game which uses marbles. I bought a spare bag of marbles at a thrift store. We also have silly puddy for her stocking! There is much to be said for the fEXUBERANCE of children on Christmas morning. We don't do it HUGE, but we do make it special and we take our time. Wish I could fave a blog. Hugs, Satin (You're definitely on the good boy list LOL)

One of my favorite things with silly putty was putting it on the comic strips and copying it onto the putty
