Disappointed

Blog Posted:10/9/2012 11:20:00 AM
Am I alone in this.... I am so disappointed with my own poetic abilities and it is very discouraging. Not so much what I write in forms, but with my free verse abilities. I know... that recognizing the problem, the shortcoming should be an inspiration to me to develop my skills at a higher level, and no doubt, i will continue to work towards that end. But looking back on my progress as a writer so far, only disappoints me terribly. I am far too emotional. I hear some of you say that poetry isn't poetry without pulling at your heart strings, but I do not agree. Frankly, I am tired of putting my emotions out there for the world to consume. I am tired of writing about my angers (which flow from poetic fingers with ease) my joys, my loves, my hates, my happiness, my sadness, my sorrows, my regrets, I am totally tired of it all. I would much rather write of sitting below an apple tree and reflecting on days gone by, without mention of how I happened to feel at that moment. Ya know what they... show, don't tell. Have any of you ever been disappointed with your own abilities? I find I have disappointed myself...BUMMER! hugs, Catie :)

PS ~ Thanks, for listening to me vent! :)

Life is filled with many cups of disappointment. No worries Catie, cups are easy to empty. All of our emotions bounce off of the reflections of who we are. Look at some of the poets on here. They say they are their worst critique~HUMM??? Well I try not to feel and be disappointed. It leads to other emotions. In my most disappointing moments, I TOO VENT a lot. But, I try to get to the root of what is "disappointing me" ,and to me, my poetry is a reflection of me, if I think it is trash, and it is not my best than you know what...It is what it is.. a big disappointment. Anyways, it is normal to feel like this. You are a bright women, you will come out of it. always~ PD

To me free verse is every poem I despise thus idea of forms. Who has the right to say what poetry is? I believe what ever we write upon a piece of paper that can extract something fron another human being us what I call poetry. It's always the reader who will interpret whether they deem it good or bad. This is okay because this in turn will interpet the person. So again to me forms of poetry do nothing more than constrain the writer. I know others may disagree but this is the opinion of one happy go lucky guy.

Write what you enjoy and not to please others. You'll be happier. Mine are meant to be funny story poems... Definately not classy but they are fun and make people happy. See some of my Troll poems or "You just cant win". I'll never win contests with them, but they make me happy.

Catie, I do not write free verse well but I keep practicing. I write a poem then tear it apart and always strive to improve. I don't follow Chris' rules well but I try. I find poetry cathartic and if I do not wish to share, I don't post a poem. I think it's an individual's choice. Write what you want and post what you want. You know you could write about a tree and the way you describe it may produce an emotion in the reader. So it doesn't have to be personal emotion shared, its just how you write it. Keep writing, and the same holds true with poetry, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Take care, Lee

Catie...I think Chris nailed it on the head with his comments and I agree with him!...I CONSTANTLY question myself and my abilities as a poet...writers question EVERYTHING including themselves...that's why they write!...As far as free verse goes, I don't understand it and probably never will and SURE don't know how to write it...I love to read others though as long as it's not too complicated... (I HATE complicated poetry!)...So hang in there!...You are not alone....

Catie you do fantastic free verse REALLY! As to putting yourself out there for everyone to see, I hear you BUT that shows you are BRAVE, you are a survivor. Readers do get tired of reading about unicorns, ghosts, butterflies, .... Do you want a COACH??? Should I read you daily and critique :)

Here is another thing. For me, writing rarely comes free and natural.More than half what I write is invented. It is like doing an exercise but trying to do it in my best possible way. (why I tend to call myself a wordsmith rather than an "inspired poet.") I take great pains to write nearly every poem I do, going over and over every line until I feel it is perfected. that is not the "free verse" way. I think it "flows" for many free verse poets, even for many rhymers. but we are all so individual in our styles. Everyone of us has something great to offer. I am not an emotional person and never have been. So the personal "sad" tanka for PD, I can't even do it. I tried 2 hrs and gave up! dang!

trust me on this, Andrea, good free verse does not come easily for me. i suppose those who have a more natural inclination for it than I, flow freely, but mine require work. A work that I love, but still, work. hugs, Catie :)
  1. Date: 10/9/2012 1:45:00 PM
Catie, when I read your poetry, I am always a bit jealous of your free verse because this is how I WISH I could write. I am always up front with my friends, and I tell them I do not write free verse for the simple reason, I am a "form poet" and I am a "wordsmith" I just like the challenge of putting words together in the best possible way. My mind does not have the ability to "think outside the box" with different and unusual images. I like descriptive writing and metaphors, but I could never write, for example, in the exotic style of Nette, Charlotte or Cyndi when they are at their "free verse best". there is another thing that makes it difficult for me... continued.

First, I agree with what the others have said. i guess we poets are more alike than we pretend. Second, practice haiku. It is all about nature. leaving 'I' out completely. It is not easy for most, and. it is a discipline to do correctly. I may write 100 to get one I consider 'good'. I post very few now. Don't worry about the syllable count, just try to write one idea, with a little twist at the end. the apple tee/ sitting below/sunset.

If that doen not work, edit your own work taking out some of the emotion to make it more general.

We all get disappointed at times. What I do is step outside of myself, and allow me to feel the Scribe, and to see if I hit my target! I like to deal with subject matter, than writing about myself. I literally read my work as a reader, not a writer, to see if I evoke any emotions within myself. To me it start with the title and opening lines. I try to write for the mass to understand, through simple wording, so all scales of intellect can grasp it!....You're a Hell of Poet Catie!

Catie I hear you. Well...I love free verse but I can barely rhyme. Disappointment is not a bad thing - it means you have the capacity to grow. Contentment equals stagnation. And you don't have to use your own emotions to write a poem, try borrowing a persona and write from their point of view. Who knows?

“All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling. To be natural is to be obvious, and to be obvious is to be inartistic.” --Oscar Wilde. I have been variously told that "when you are older...." to "it is not easy to recall when you were young"... BECOME the subject and leave your ego (that other "bad bit") at the door. Like all good painters will tell you: The secret of a good painting lies in recognizing when to leave it alone. That is how I feel about some of my poems. It was a statement at the time, and does not reflect my current mood/take on matters. A disclaimer in a way.... :-)

P.S. -- only good writers self-evaluate their writing. Only good writers have moments such as the one you are having now. The irony is, those people who are satisfied with their writing, who boast how good they are, etc....well, 99% of the time, they are terrible writers!

Catie, I am my own worst critic. This drives me to keep trying and trying, not to settle into complacency. I can understand your: "Frankly, I am tired of putting my emotions out there for the world to consume." I am not publicly posting a lot of my recent poems(I mean, new poems that haven't been posted ANYWHERE). I cannot stop myself from putting my emotions into poems(just not for me to do!), but I don't have to publicly post them. Hey, putting up a blog like this, reinforces how you don't want to be a mediocre writer churning out a bunch of blah, and how you want to continue pushing yourself beyond complacency with regards to your writing.
