In The Meadow

Written by: Joyce Johnson

She stops in the lush meadow
to give birth to her twins.
Coyote catches mother’s scent.
He looks around and grins.
The first lamb arises quickly
and finds her willing teat.
The second lies there weakly
and gives a little bleat.

The mother nudges number one
And says, “We have to hurry.
The predators will be here soon.
In nature they’re a worry.”
Her second child is left there
to hold coyote’s attention.
She shows her new son to the flock,
his sister does not mention.
