My Heart is Not Mine to Give Away

Written by: Eileen Ghali

My heart’s not mine to give away
I stand here empty handed
My heart’s not mine to give away
So I beg you, don’t demand it

You see, some twenty years ago
I gave it to my lover boy
And though careless he is with it
And treats it much like a toy…

I did pledge him full ownership
And then gladly gifted the key
I can’t now ask to have it back
Though he’s negligent as can be…

You promise better times to give
To bathe it with love and care
You promise to do all the things
That only a lover would dare

Tempting, tempting, but oh my dear
This I cannot…should not forget
Were I to fall into your arms
It would only cause me regret

For, my heart’s not mine to give away
It’s a truth not so confounded
My heart’s not mine to give away
So please don’t try hard to woo it

You write words that captivate
I’m drawn by every sweet line
You promise to be my knight
But darling, you can’t be mine

Your tenderness and your love
Are ever hard to resist
You’re tempting me to steal my heart
To hand it over with a kiss

I must remind my foolish mind
Like Eve strolling unattended
My heart is not mine to give away
So don’t you dare allure it

Though I care more than you know
And am longing for attention
My little heart stays where it is
So hear this tortured confession….

My heart is not mine to give away
It cannot bear to be stranded
My heart is not mine to give away
So don’t try so hard to entice it…

No, my heart is not mine to give away
On it his name is branded
My heart is not mine to give away
So please, oh please, don't demand it.
