Looking forward to Christmas

Written by: Chuma Okonkwo

As I write from far away
I Struggle to keep my thoughts and feelings at bay
My words drop on my paper in awe, arrah!
My nostalgia races through my mind in disarray.

There is nothing quite like the coming of Christmas
The melodies, decorations, and hyped spirits make me feel Christmassy
There is nothing quite excellent like the Christmas season
When we all honour and celebrate for a great reason.

We commemorate our Saviour’s birth
Whose life on earth was a myth
We praise God’s name in glorious prayer
And show Mary, the mother, how much we revere her.

As the time draws nearer
And the end of the year comes closer
We embark on a shopping spree;
Shop around for spectrums of items and never miss a Christmas tree.

I’m far away from home
It feels like I’m alone in a dome
Emasculated of my family’s love and care
But I’m consoled by the memories of times we shared.

Though my thoughts and emotions are no more depressing
The creepy weather brings cold feeling and moaning
But my hope in the peace, love and sweet tidings the season will bring
Makes every cold feeling and moaning endearing.

I look forward to eating my friend’s nice-looking mince pies
My ears itch for the chitchats with my angelic niece, an incredible magpie
I look forward to seeing on Christmas day little girls and boys
Brimming with candid smiles as they move around with their Christmas toys.
