The Gaze

Written by: Tara Andre

Her eyes stand out against dark skin,
Skin that is darkened by dust and tears.
Pupils dilated by brightness and fears,
Yet her mouth is closed, her jaw proudly set.

She looks out fiercely, as if in defiance
Questioning, daring, goading the viewer
To underestimate the power within her.
For though she is troubled, she remains strong.

The viewer may stare at her in sympathy,
But she has had all she needs all along.
