The Evil Spirit
off west Africa
rising from the ocean’s warmth. . .
a white ghost awakes
thunder on the edge
of the spirit’s calm cold eye. . .
vomiting hard rains
the spirit whirls insanely. . .
trees below tremble
scream inside a blast of sand. . .
clothes caught on bushes
strong structures shatter
by the time the spirit winds down. . .
mercy washed away
(according to one source, the word hurricane
has a Carib origin meaning God of Evil.)
