THE THINGS I WISH I DIDN'T KNOW

Written by: Lori Hopkins

PEOPLE ARE STARVING AS I WRITE MY GROCERY LIST
ONE CHILD'S CARESSED WITH A LOVING HAND
ANOTHER POUNDED WITH ANGRY FIST
I SAW A POD OF WHALES SLAUGHTERED AS THEY SWAM
I SAW A DOG BEATEN BEFORE THE EXPERIMENTS BEGAN
I SAW A MAN WHO HAS NO LEGS
AND CHICKENS FORCED TO LAY THEIR EGGS
I SAW THE SOLDIERS KILL AND RAPE
AND THE POACHING OF THE VANISHING APE
I SAW THE TEARS IN A BLIND MAN'S EYES
AND THE POLLUTION IN THE LA SKIES
I SAW A CHILD WHO'D BEEN MOLESTED
I SAW CORRUPTION UNPROTESTED
I SAW A MONKEY WITH EYES SEWN SHUT
AND A FAMILY IN AFRICA SLAIN IN THEIR HUT
I SAW THE MIGHTY TREES CHOPPED DOWN
AS THE WILDLIFE SCURRIED AROUND
LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO GO
THESE ARE THE THINGS I WISH I DIDN'T KNOW
A HOMELESS OLD WOMAN DIES ALONE
NO COMFORT OF LOVED ONES
NO SECURITY OF HOME
I SAW AN ELEPHANT STRUGGLE IN ITS CHAINS
THERE ARE DROUGHTS AND BLIZZARDS AND DEADLY HURRICAINES
I SAW A BABY BURNED FROM HEAD TO TOE
THESE ARE THE THINGS I WISH I DIDN'T KNOW
SO WHO AM I TO COMPLAIN
WHO DO I THINK I AM
I JUST HOPE THE HORRORS OF THIS WORLD
ARE PART OF A BIGGER PLAN
