Shut Down

Written by: Carl Fraser

Another sleepless night
and the shadows even refuse to talk to me anymore.
When shadows lose interest, what's left?
Just the sound of my own voice
echoing off these four walls.
My ears have blocked me from my own thoughts.
Nothing but numbness.
I recoil to that faraway cave,
where I would hide as a child;
When the monsters would come and play.
I feel emptied of all existence
to an unprobed realm of spiraling blackness;
where it's hard to breathe in a new reality.
My mind crashes and screams for release
but there is no rescue here.
My soul snuggles up to my last heartbeat,
as the Boatman approaches, my candle goes out;
I am shut down
