Heat Rites

Written by: Sherese Gooden

On a dark night when a fire’s lit
Begins an orange glow that sparks

To burst into tongues of flames that
                      Lick the innocent air.

          A fire blazes red-hot
And splashed with water, it is not …

On a sultry summer day, the sea shimmers
With silver sparkles, warmed; in the aftermath
Of white crested waves that lick the shore
And spent, they die again to be reborn
To ride a wave to kiss the shore,
  And be no more…
